It would have been much more dangerous in the days of slam door trains.
15th October 1988…
I enjoyed 3 -4 hours or so in Red Bank Carriage Sidings.
came in on a railtour with 44932, was assisting on a sales stand in the BSK. Back in 1988 this was still usual BR mk1 /2 stock.
44932 uncoupled and took off to Liverpool road (It slipped to a stand on the way in and the Miles Platting banker had to rescue it). Passengers took off for an EMU ride upto Bury.
Someone needed to stay with the sales stand stock in the BR BSK so I volunteered, but as far as BR was concerned, no one knew I was in that rake of mk1’s.
At Red Bank I got out had a wander around, looked at various DMUs, and GUVs, later had a natter with the driver of the 31 on the ECS who greeted me with a surprised “who the e’ll are you ?”.
Then sat in a compartment and went back with the ECS, watched from outside vic as 44932 reversed back into Vic after turning.
