I commute within sight of the Irlam railway bridge and fancy spending tomorrow having a bit of a bash over it. To make it a bit more interesting, I'd like to do the Ormskirk-Preston branch in daylight as well. I seem to use it during twilight hours.

Put simply, is an Ormskirk - Manchester return valid by:
Outward

Ormskirk - Preston
Preston - Horwich or Wigan - Manchester Stations

Return

Manchester Stations - Irlam - Liverpool Stations
Liverpool Stations - Ormskirk?

If not, what ticket would cover my journey?

Thanks in Advance.

Nothing unusual about those routes, indeed they are the obvious two (the Burscoughs only work if you are happy with a walk, and it's cheaper to split if you're going to do that, or at least always used to be, while Kirkby has a very basic service and nothing in the evening).

I haven't checked, but I'll eat my virtual hat if they are not Permitted.

Both routes are permitted. You won't be questioned whichever route you take as both are entirely reasonable. Have a nice trip :)
