Does anyone have any experience of upgrading to first class on the day?

I’m traveling from Cardiff – Liverpool in a few weeks’ time, on a Friday evening and have the option of taking this train. I’ll need to change in Chester.

Does anyone know how much is the on the day upgrade is? (I’m guessing about £25) I can’t find a definite answer online. Whilst no two days are the same what are the chances of getting a seat in first class for the full Cardiff-Chester run?

Thanks in advance.

brfares.com indicates here that a Single Adult ATW Business Zone supplement Cardiff Central - Chester route Arriva Trn Wales costs £20.00 and is valid Monday - Friday on 05:33 Holyhead - Cardiff Central or 17:16 Cardiff Central - Holyhead.

Friday evening Cardiff - Chester you almost certainly need to book in advance to guarantee getting a seat in the business class carriage!

I've done it a few times on a Friday and each time the carriage has been fully booked up. (The only night it tends to happen).

Can you upgrade with any ticket type?

Officially only from walk on fares, if you where on an advance you could technically be excessed up to the most appropriate walk on fare, then sold the upgrade.

However in practice if they have space they'll just take the money for the upgrade.
