For one-way travel from Stansted Airport + London travelcard you can buy:

Anytime Travelcard £39.20
Off-peak Travelcard £28.40

Anytime Single - Tottenham Hale - £20
London Travelcard - £7+
=£27+

or, I think cheapest:
Audley End-Boundary Zone 4 SDS £13.10
Zone 1-4 Off-Peak Travelcard £7.70

= £20.80

Originating Stansted the best you could do is:
Stansted-BZ6 SDS £14.40
Zone 1-6 Off-Peak Travelcard £8.50
= £22.90

Anyway, the question is what is the validity of this Anytime+Off-peak combination?

You have, ex-SSD:

08:30 calling Bishops Stortford 08:39, Tottenham Hale 09:05, Liverpool Street 09:23
08:45 calling Stansted Mountfichet 08:51 Harlow Town 09:02, TOM 09:21, LST 09:38
SSD 09:00 BIS 09:09 TOM 09:35 LST 09:53
SSD 09:15 SST 09:21 HWN 09:32 TOM 09:48 LST 10:03
SSD 09:30 BIS 09:39 TOM 10:03

Obviously the 09:30 is valid, and I would assume the 09:15 is, as it's still in Harlow at 09:32, outside zone 4/6. How about the 09:00 though? Earlier trains?

If you're using a combination of tickets then you need to comply with the restrictions shown on all tickets. An Off Peak Zone 1-4/6 Travelcard has a rather straightforward blanket time restriction, you can't use it anywhere within the area of its validity before 09:30.

What exactly is it you're trying to find out? Are all the times and prices you've quoted relevant to the query :s

The 0900 is timed through Brimsdown (Zone 5) at 0929 1/2 according to opentraintimes, so the boundary zone 6 ticket plus Travelcard is not valid. As the train is unlikely to be timed to reach the boundary of Zone 4 before 0930 the boundary zone 4 extension would be fine. The ticket to Tottenham Hale would also be fine as the train is timed to depart there at 0935.

None of the earlier trains could use these combinations and all of the later ones could.

The boundary is somewhere between Ponders End (Z5) and Angel Road (Z4). Even at 125mph a train would only just make it between Brimsdown and Ponders End in less than 30 seconds; at 80 or 90 (what is the limit along there?) it should be fine!

Ok so the guard on the train is supposed to calculate when the train should have (according to the timetable) crossed the boundary in these cases?

Sample RPO examination question:
6. Two trains leave stations A and B respectively, one travelling from A to B at 60mph and one travelling from B to A at 90mph. They meet after 9 minutes, how far is it between the stations?

I've used an EM Rover on the 08:25 train out of St Pancras timed to pass Bedford at exactly 09:00. But then, I printed out the schedules from various internal systems so I could cover myself. Unless it's written in plain black and white that the train enters Zone 4 after 09:30 then it's not worth the bother.

I fail to see the relevance.

Plus your question has no solution anyway as you did not state when these two trains left. ;)

BTW I agree with the analysis by hairyhandedfool.

Unless they were travelling at constant speed and hadn't actually stopped at either station then we'd need to know the accelleration rate of each train as well. If it was constant and they passed their respective stations at the same time, then the answer is 22.5 miles.
I fail to see the relevance.

I can see what he's trying to say, but it is a slightly flawed argument. The main issue is that the actual boundary is undefined where there is no dual zoned station, other than that there is no gap between zones. I think to be safe you would need to ensure that the train passed the last station in the previous zone after the required time.
