I am just wondering why are the train and ferry connections from Fishguard Harbour and Pembroke Dock so bad at Rosslare Harbour in Ireland?
The ferries which most passengers use arrive in at 18:00 on the Fishguard Harbour service and at 18:46 on the Pembroke Dock service. However the last train of the day to Dublin is very early at 17:55 which means that both ferries miss the connection. So your only option is taking a Taxi. There is earlier ferries which arrive at 06:30 on the Rosslare Harbour service and at 06:46 on the Pembroke Dock service. These allow you to connect on to the 07:20 service to Dublin so you dont have too much of a long wait. However these ferries leave Fishguard Harbour and Pembroke Dock very early in the morning so are not as convenient as the later ferries.
On the way back there is an 08:45 Pembroke Dock service and a 09:00 Fishguard Harbour service. However the first train of the day from Dublin does not arrive at Rosslare until 12:26 which means you miss both ferry services. Which again means your only option is taking a Taxi. There are later services on the 20:45 to Pembroke Dock service and the 21:15 to Fishguard Harbour service. These services are quite convenient as there is a train from Dublin the arrives at 19:25 (on Mondays to Fridays only) so you only have around an hour and half wait for either ferry (which is still quite a poor connection). However on Saturdays and Sundays the trains from Dublin arrive 16:26 and 16:32 which means that you have a very long wait of around four to five hours for either ferry.
This is the ferry timetables:

Is there any reason why Irish Rail are not bothering to run a better timetable to connect with the Fishguard Harbour and Pembroke Dock ferry services? Do these two ferry services see many foot passengers or is it mainly passengers with vehicles? Is there a chance that Irish Rail could revise the timetable to include much earlier trains and much later trains and better connections?
