Could have been anything - not wanting to block the platform, for example. The 2008 ex-PRE M-F is the only train I know booked through platform 1 and over.

I have seen many a VT Voyager go through the UFL before diverging onto the Wolverhampton line so it probably isn't particularly uncommon

It may depend on the time of day as the XC's use both platform 1 and 4 and there doesn't appear to be much logic as to when they use either!

Virgin Voyagers towards Brum can cross either end of Stafford station. The crossovers north of the station are faster, so they would be the preferred route, but it would depend on the position of other trains.

Often the Voyagers are late coming down from Scotland and trains have to be held in the up slow platform to follow them, so in this instance they would cross at the south end.
