ScotRail units work the 1100ish/1558/2012 arrivals and 0646/1323/1716 departures from Newcastle as these services operate through to Glasgow Central, but they're crewed by Northern staff east of Carlisle.

The stopping services between Glasgow and Newcastle (via Dumfries and Carlisle) are jointly operated by Scotrail (Glasgow-Carlisle) and Northern Rail (Carlisle-Newcastle), however, the information systems cannot cope with two train operators on one service and so the Glasgow-Newcastle services appear as Scotrail services, while the Newcastle-Glasgow services appear as Northern Rail services.

I'm out and about at the moment with only limited access to wifi. I'd travel via Euston.

Off Peak Return route:+Via Dumfries is £185 and valid on any train from Cambridge to Kings Cross and then any train departing Euston after 0905. On the return it's valid on all trains arriving at Euston after 1005 then any train from Kings Cross to Cambridge.

Example timings:
Cambridge dep. 0950
Kings Cross arr. 1044
Euston dep. 1130
Carlisle arr. 1416
Carlisle dep. 1512
Kilmarnock arr. 1655
Kilmarnock dep. 1704
Stranraer arr. 1854

On the return:
Stranraer dep. 1010
Kilmarnock arr. 1208
Kilmarnock dep. 1250
Carlisle arr. 1435
Carlisle dep. 1449
Euston arr. 1810
Kings Cross dep. 1914
Cambridge arr. 2005 (in reality you'd arrive earlier as it doesn't take an hour to get from Euston to Kings Cross)

No need to rattle around on uncomfortable trains between Newcastle and Carlisle!

It's a through train which changes operator at Carlisle (not all systems can cope with a change of operator en-route).

Northern operate this service on departure from Carlisle heading east, and Scotrail operate this service on departure from Carlsile heading west.

On the return:
Stranraer dep. 1010
Kilmarnock arr. 1208
Kilmarnock dep. 1250
Carlisle arr. 1435
Carlisle dep. 1449
Euston arr. 1810
Kings Cross dep. 1914
Cambridge arr. 2005 (in reality you'd arrive earlier as it doesn't take an hour to get from Euston to Kings Cross)

Or you could go via the Settle and Carlisle if scenery beats speed. And as it's an offpeak return you don't have to decide in advance.

Personally I would use the previous departure from Cambridge on the outward journey to give more time in London in case of delays.

I don't think there is a better route, and the price is giving you the best route there is.

Different price points, longer but I wonder if possibly:

Out on 3rd
10:01 Cambridge [CBG] to Peterborough [PBO] - 12:40 Newcastle [NCL] (116.30 offpeak R)
14:24 Newcastle [NCL] - 15:57 Carlisle [CAR] (4.50 northern rail advance single)
16:47 Carlisle [CAR] - 18:01 Glasgow Central [GLC] (24.40 offpeak R)
18:30 Glasgow Central [GLC] - 20:59 Stranraer [STR] (21.00 offpeak R)

Return on 6th
10:10 STR - (Ayr) - 12:41 GLC
13:09 GLC - 14:29 CAR
15:28 CAR - 16:48 NCL (4.50 northern rail advance single)
17:25 NCL - (Peterborough) - 21:08 CBG

Total £170.70 return.

Or an even longer possibility (but possibly on more comfortable trains for longer):

08:18 Cambridge [CBG] - (London) - 11:27 Birmingham New St [BHM] (37 offpeak R)
11:36 Birmingham New St [BHM] - 13:10 Liverpool Lime St [LIV] (9.50 London Midland adv single)
13:32 Liverpool Lime St [LIV] - 16:00 Carlisle [CAR] (24.50 offpeak R)
16:47 Carlisle [CAR] - 18:01 Glasgow Central [GLC] (24.40 offpeak R)
18:30 Glasgow Central [GLC] - 20:59 Stranraer [STR] (21.00 offpeak R)

Total £125.90 return, assuming another 9.50 advance is available for return leg.
Or £144.40 return to do it all with Offpeak Rs (LST - BHM £37.50) .
