Virgin: Off-peak ticket refund

    Hi, I recently bought a Virgin West Coast off-peak return ticket, which I will not now be using because I needed to change the outward travel date, so I'll be buying different tickets for the journey.

    I understand I can get a refund on the unused tickets minus £10, and that the easiest way to do this is just to never pick up the tickets, and phone Virgin customer services.

    However, although I won't be using these particular tickets as I'll be travelling on a different off-peak (flexible, NOT advance) ticket, I would still quite like the option of using the free seat reservation that goes with them for the return journey. And obviously, to do that, I need to actually pick up the tickets.

    So my question is... if I pick up the tickets, but don't use them (except for the seat reservation - but that never gets marked if you use it), is that going to complicate the process of getting a refund?

    If you pick them up you'll have to post them in.

    Doesn't your confirmation say what the reservation is?

    Ah, yes the confirmation email does say what the seat is. I'm assuming what you're suggesting is that I should not pick up the tickets, but simply keep a note of which seat it is, and aim to sit there, on the assumption that since the seat will say, reserved, it's likely that no one else will take it?

    That sounds a good plan, thanks! I guess the only disadvantage is that if someone else does sit in it, I'll have no evidence with which to challenge them and take the seat. But I think I can live with that

    Don't pick up tickets. Request a refund via customer service. Make a separate seat reservation once you have the new ticket you will be travelling on.

    Virgin may... well, they should, cancel the reservations once they receive the refund request from you. So best to book a new one.

    Or put in for the refund after the day of travel, which with walk ups you can do (though I forget how long you get).

    28 days from date of expiry of ticket. Means OP would have to wait longer for refund.
