Around May time there's normally diversions on Virgin services where they avoid the WCML from Crewe, diverting through Piccadilly P13/14 and Bolton. Are these still running this year, and if so, does anyone know what dates?

I just saw it, thanks anyways. As far as I can see on RTT they go via Crewe (picking up truncated Scotland-Birmingham-Euston paths there).

They did and it was Manchester and Euston drivers both getting relieved at Stockport by Liverpool crews.Wasn't there at one point during diversions that trains did go Stoke-Manchester-Liverpool? Which drivers did these then?
Yes this route is signed by all Virgin drivers (except Scottish based) and train managers from Colwich - Stoke - Alsager - Crewe and is used quite often for diversions. Also been Crewe-Stoke diversions when Crewe-Stafford is shut. Taking the Hixon route.
