What does 1Y40 mean?

It's the train reporting number, normally called a headcode. You can find some more info here.

But basically the first number identifies the type of train (1 meaning express passenger), the letter indicates the area of it's destination and the double digits at the end identify the actual train (as there might be a lot of services with the 1Y designation so you need someway of telling them apart).

Thank you... so a bit like a flight number, but containing more info?

Pretty much though I don't know much about flight numbers

I have looked at the Wikipedia page but I can't see what the Y refers to. Is Y an area of the UK?

The list on Wiki isn't exhaustive as I can spot a few missing including Y. There probably is a list of all the codes but I'm not aware of where it could be found.

Most special trains run with a Z in the headcode, although since the Kent VSOE runs so often, it has several ordinary schedules in the system every day, with 1Y40 being one of them!

There may also be a steam special in that area operated by Railway Touring Company hauled by SR Loco "Tangmere", and another steam train operated by Steam Dreams too hauled hopefully the new new loco "Tornado", see UK Steam info website. Times will be added nearer the date of travel. Happy spotting.
