So continued waste of a 175 on WAG2 with hours sat in Canton depot. Disapointing. How is it being paid for, is it coming out of the money paid for the service with 67s or have ATW refunded that and charged WAG for a 175 instead? WAG had better not be paying twice for it.

Ill get my A M to ask the question to the Minister, in a formal written request.

In my opinion, I would not be surprised to see WG paying for the 175, they will certainly be paying for the extension of the 57, the previous Minister fell into the trap of operating these two open access trains using existing paths. ATW would have to find another 1620 to Abergavenny to fulfil the franchise, the Wrexham would revert to Birmingfham

Tonight's WAG1 apparently still at Cardiff waiting for a herd of cows to be rounded up (in the dark!) somewhere between there and Newport.
Could be a long night...

Update:
NRES now says it left CDF on time but now 96 late not yet reached NWP.

Update 2:
On the move past Abergavenny, 108 late.
1721 CDF-HHD cancelled to SHR.
WAG2 left CDF 46 late.

WG Budget
I see from the WG site that the 2012/3 budget has been approved, with £47.142m allocated to "Improve Public Transport (Rail)".

http://wales.gov.uk/docs/finance/report/111129megsen.pdf

While the AMs are slapping each other on the back, does anybody know what this means to us?

hopefully part of it is carried over from earlier years £28M for Wrexham/Saltney redouble, but need £40M I await the actual breakdown.

Gareth Marston should be in the know.

Bob

I should have said the £47m is in the Capital budget (ie paying NR for new infrastructure like Gowerton/Saltney),
while £172.3m is in the Revenue budget under the same heading (ie paying ATW for things like Gerald or new Cambrian services).

If the TOTAL budget is £47million, it doesn't look good.

On the plus side, Gerald's future looks bright. I did try and emphasize the difference between CAPITAL (infrastructure) and REVENUE (services) in earlier posts.

Yes I realised the £47M was capitol for new infrastructure, that's why I replied to it (IE Wrexham redouble etc) Hope some of the £172M is spent up here as well,

thanks for the info,

Just found this on the welsh Governments webpage.

http://wales.gov.uk/topics/transport/publications/ntp/?lang=en&status=closed

Just been reading through it, a good bit of road projects suggested some rail improvements including possible extra services on the heart of wales line.

It doesn't seem to have changed much from the previous national transport plan, except the loss of 'by 2011' for the Cambrian hourly service.

The future of the railway west of Carmarthen is not looking too bright, with it's potential competiveness about to be jepodised three-fold. First the A40 acceleration east of Penblewin roundabout and then diversion of the main road from St Clears to Pembroke onto a new, faster, alignment between St Clears and Red Roses will hit the routes directly. Second, there's a lack of any proposals to stop Network Rail repeating the mistakes of the past on the Swansea District Line. They are to reverse two of the mistakes of the past, the Gowerton and Wrexham single track sections, but once that's done they plan to single the only line that could make time-competive rail journeys between south-west Wales and anywhere west of Swansea possible! At least, single-tracking is the roumor that's been going round for a while.

I am pleased to read about Wrexham redoubling excellent news , now to find the full details.

Yes but no mention of improving the service or adding any services only for the South again. Why spend all that money on un-neccessary redoubling and not run more services? I think that there should be a guarentee for the TOC and WAG that after the redoubling takes place extra services will be provided?

These points I doubt will happen in the timescale:

And they have quoted "we will"

24. Refurbish and invest in rolling stock to improve the actual and perceived
security, level of comfort and journey times on trains, by 2014.

27. Working with Network Rail and the Regional Transport Consortia,
investigate opportunities for re-opening disused railway lines in Wales.

Utilization of capital spend seems to be an issue theirs no firm date on any extra trains on Cambrian or to West Wales.

Agree then only push is services North to Cardiff, the West/East in the North is
in desperate need for extra capacity, as I have said before, if the Wrexham Saltney redouble is not done, no extra capacity could run that way, 3 trains an hour max is not good enough for the future, Better the money is spent in the North on rail infrastructure.

Gerallt Gymro is an "ongoing commitment", so that should end the speculation on its future.

Cambrian hourly (as far as Shrewsbury) also in there.

There's precious little detail and as we all know its the detail that counts. Will Ongoing commitment mean via Wrexham?, Class 67's? If so when. No statement of intent on WAG 2 either way.

The Cambrian isn't hourly at all the plan re hashes the phrase no one could explain first time around "daytime hourly" and its to be "taken forward in 2012-2015"also were told "Working with Network Rail and Arriva Trains Wales" well haven't we had infrastructure already put in place: Dyfi Jnc loop Welshpool dynamic, Platform 3 Shrewsbury. Given nothing else runs on the line bar the existing 2 hrly ATW service what exactly is there to discuss further?

No date for actually doing the Wrexham-Saltney redoubling, just "continue working on detailed design".

I didn't expect any more, to be honest.
Keeps the cosh on NR to get the cost down.
Maybe it will appear in the "enhance capacity Shrewsbury-Wrexham-Chester" 2012-15.

I see there is no change in commitment to Wagair, in fact capacity is to be increased beyond 2015!

No date for the redoubling other than what is stated,my guess it will start/finish near the new elections at WG & then both Minsters at either end can boast about it.
At least its still on the boil, but the kettle is getting empty

As for WAGAIR, thats just the ex Ministers bluff.

The hourly machine has rumbled back into life here, so it will go back on the boil soon. Wrexham Saltney apparently has a couple of issues about what to do with freights at the bottom of the bank if they get held.

My sources indicate a rough ball park cost was provided to WG in 2008 assuming everything for Cambrian hourly would be additional cost on existing services and nothing has been pursued since even though infrastructure work was authorized.

Have had delays last 2 trips north on marches due to freight trains in way. 12 mins at Abergavenney and saw 66 looped at Pontrilas. What happened to Llanvihangel bank block post? and more recently 7 mins at All Stretton but no sign of anything at Salop.

But so is Iuean Air! I thought everyone except a few Plaid members were against it. Iuean Air was supposed to be gone by 2015, but here there plan to make the plane bigger! Seems we now have governments that don't care about climate change in both Westminster and Cardiff Bay, very worrying and dissapointing. No word on electrification either, I thought that should be the very top of the prority list on the prioritised plan but it has disapeared from the plan completly (I think the old one said something about working with the UK gov. to electrify GWML).

BBC Wales today claims the new focus of the transport plan is small east-west projects, but the A470 (north-south?) still features heavily and the massive road schemes (A465 Heads Of the Valleys dualling and A477 from St Clears to Red Roses) are still in there.

Re-evaluate business case for introducing additional services on Heart of Wales line appears, far down the list, but their website already says there might be a case for additional Sunday services but not weekday ones (why? lack of rolling stock?, the all-halts calling patern?).

Planner, Gresford Bank was always a problem in pre singling days.

WAG2, no one seems to know what's happening, speculation is there will be one one WAG via Wrexham, but not for months.

WAGAIR is amazing everyone, so could it be, One bigger WAGAIR for tourists, and one WAG Ex in place of two trains, as clear as mud.

AM calls for clarification on transport plan “priorities”

Aled Roberts, Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for North Wales, has called for clarification on the Welsh Government’s plans for transport in North Wales.

Commenting on a list of priorities announced by the Local Government Minister today, Aled said:

“The announcements in the National Transport Plan contain some good news for the region, and I welcome the confirmation of funding for improvements to the A470, Wrexham Industrial Estate access road Phase 2 and the construction of a cycling/walking path from Pontcysyllte to Chirk.

“However, plans for the doubling of the railway track between Wrexham and Chester are not at all clear.

“We are told that detailed design work will be undertaken next year on redoubling the line between Wrexham and Saltney but there is no timeline as far as actual construction is concerned.

“The plan states that the track between Gowerton and Loughor in South Wales will go ahead in 2013/14 but where is the firm commitment to the completion of the Saltney project which, after all, was announced three years ago?”

Cost-benefit decision?

With all respect, the benefit is obvious, with it being the biggest pinch point in North Wales.

The Ministers statement, on the Wrexham,Flintshire,Chester rail triangle seems to have not been mentioned yet, so I ask, anybody know about this.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
loading my AM up with q's regarding Cambrian also

The questions have to be asked now , fortunately I have two excellent AMs who do ask questions, plus questions are being thrown at Taith by AMs who are also deeply involved.

The Libs have agreed to the signing off of this plan, & the Wrexham redouble is on my Lib AMs doorstep, of which I have reminded him.

With all respect, the benefit is obvious, with it being the biggest pinch point in North Wales.

The Ministers statement, on the Wrexham,Flintshire,Chester rail triangle seems to have not been mentioned yet, so I ask, anybody know about this.

The cost-benefit is favourable, but the question I was asking was whether the Gowerton - Loughor redoubling has a more favourable cost benefit.

I still think that establishing a link between the Borderlands and North Wales Coast at Shotton needs to be considered more fully. This would add more North-South capacity, and maybe a Wrexham-Chester shuttle could be set up?

The fact that Wrexham - Saltney can't be FULLY redoubled must add to the doubts about the project.
