The wife & I are spending a week in Pickering Yorkshire next month. We will be mountain biking in Dalby Forest and hopefully do a couple of walks as well.

One walk I've planned is the Hole of Horcum. I'm now looking for another one, hopefully starting from Pickering or a short bus ride away. Any ideas?

Thank you.

If you don't mind forking-out for a trip on the North York Moors Railway, you could alight at Goathland, walk down the old railway to Beck Hole for a lunch stop at the delightful Birch Hall Inn and then walk on down into Grosmont for the train back to Pickering.

Well done. I will be doing section 4 tomorrow, or at least part of it, from Hayes. At my age I am not up to doing 12 miles in a day. There are reports of some sections of the loop being very overgrown at the moment, how did you find this?

This is my second walk of the loop, I walked that bit in 2019. Since buses from Havering-atte-Bower are as scarce as blue moons we finished at Havering Park. See https://davesergeant.com/loop20.htm

Thanks for that. I’ll give the OS Map a bit of a look at.

I just completed the National Three Peaks Challenge in 23 hours, 40 minutes. Doing it in under 24 hours is challenging unless you're a runner/jogger type which I am not. Here were our timings (we had a non-walking driver):
17:00 - start climbing Ben Nevis
20:00 - top of Ben Nevis
22:00 - finish Ben Nevis
03:33 - start climbing Scafell Pike from Wasdale
05:50 - top of Scafell Pike
07:30 - finish Scafell Pike
12:00 - start climbing Snowdon via Pyg Trail
15:00 - top of Snowdon
16:40 - finish descent alongside railway into Llanberis.

It's the first time that I've been on Snowdon and not been stuck in cloud. My legs are killing me now though.

Very well done, and an amazing feat to accomplish. Not my cup of tea personally mind, as I like to take in the scenery rather than push for times on the most direct route to the top.

When I was staying in Pickering last summer I got the 128 bus to Helmsley and did a nice walk from there. I walked along part of the the Cleveland Way to Reivaulx Abbey, visited the abbey and explored a little around some if the lanes and paths around Reivaulx village before walking back to Helmsley. You can make part of the walk circular by using permissive paths which are not shown in the OS Maps. This path goes from the top of the village at the junction with the B1257 past Griff Farm to rejoin the Cleveland Way back to Helmsley. Unfortunately the 128 bus now only runs 2 hourly but I that didn't cause me too many problems.

I‘m back in Pickering in a few weeks time so looking forward to doing some more walks in the area. Last year I tried to do a circular walk from the village of Sinnington to Appleton-Le-Moors and back but I had to give up as it was so muddy by the river. I might try than again next month. Sinnington can also be reached on the 128 bus.

Stock to North Weald, 18 miles. I headed west along the St. Peter's Way footpath through mid-Essex, passing Margaretting, Mill Green - where the Viper was open at 11am and doing a steady trade by ten past - onto lovely Blackmore, where the faithful were in full voice as I passed the church. New housing at Paslow's Green brightened the view before I skimmed High Ongar, ending up in its bigger brother. Onto the Essex Way for the last few miles and a look inside Greensted church - beautiful - before a pint at the Green Man in Toot Hill set me up for the last couple of miles to North Weald and a vintage Routemaster home - well, part of the way anyway.

Well done to @maniacmartin for the Three Peaks of GB.

I wonder how long it would take to add Carrauntoohil in Ireland and Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland? After all, Llanberis is quite close to Holyhead.

I did twelve miles on the Trans-Pennine Trail from Penistone to Wombwell yesterday and was surprised how quiet it was.

I did a beautiful walk on Saturday from Gargrave via the wilderness to reach Nelson along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, very twisty due to avoiding the hills and mostly a reasonable towpath with only a couple of areas where it was a bit rough.

Friday was an explore of the Selby canal, although for the majority of the time the towpath was separated from the canal by trees or bushes, with only a few areas where the towpath & canal met. After I reached Selby I jumped on a bus to Riccall to walk the route of the old ECML towards the outskirts of York which was another stroll in North Yorkshire countryside.

Well, I was wearing walking trousers and a long-sleeved jacket, but I still got scratched by a bramble on my hand.

That damaged log bridge has just been fixed, BTW.

12 miles round trip for Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa yesterday. Llanberis path up, ranger path down. Definitely need to go back at some point as whilst I loved the hike, with the thick cloud cover and my wet glasses, there wasn't much to see:

That’s a bit underwhelming from a view perspective, but good exercise nonetheless!

I’ve just done a couple of local reservoir walks this week, this is More Hall reservoir near Stocksbridge, Sheffield which I did on one of the hot days this week as it’s fairly shady.

Indeed. I stupidly assumed with the great weather we're having this week the views would be great, but alas. The wind was that bad I had to hunker down on the summit!

Your photos have reminded me just how beautiful parts of Sheffield area. If you haven't already, I'd recommend going to Bradfield, the reservoir there is beautiful.

Oh wow, at least it won’t have been too cold. I always use the Met Office forecast for my hikes as I find that accurate so far and if I’m not likely so see anything all day I just don’t bother these days.

Yes, Bradfield is beautiful, it’s only around 15mins from my house, but has the feel of being in the Lake District or somewhere altogether different to suburban Sheffield. There are two reservoirs there actually, one either side of the village and yes they are both very pleasant, and there’s the pub/brewery of course :)

Today I caught the (unusual in itself for South Yorkshire) bus 29 up to Dunford Bridge, and walked back down to Wortley via Penistone. This completes the line for me from Hadfield to Wadsley bridge. Still plenty of interest on the line, I managed to stay dry and enjoyed the walk a lot. I did it at a decent pace, doing it in 3 hours to the bus stop in the hamlet of Wortley. I’ve also been reminded of the miniature railway at Wortley Top Forge, which I should probably visit sometime with it being so local. The bus driver also gave me a free ride for some reason and it’s 2+1 seating and a very pleasant interior.

less than a week now still i start the next stage of the GR5 from Modane to Auron in the French Alps. 9 days of hiking and camping, looking forward to it, been a while since i did the previous bit!

Previously done Thonon-les-Bains to Chamonix (6 days) and Chamonix to Modane (7 days). This promises to be the toughest part so far!

I did that on Saturday! I got the SO 26a from Stockbridge to Crow Edge then changed onto the 29. Walked from Dunford Bridge to Penistone - fantastic wild flowers at the moment on this section, then jumped on a couple of buses to avoid a bit I’d already done to Wombwell, walking on to Harlington.

I got some more free Northern tickets, so I decided to do one of my favourite bits of the Cumbrian Coast (again), from Seascale to Harrington. Just over 22 miles, and just shy of 7 hours. I really do love this section of the England Coastal Path, as you're hugging the railway quite a bit. I'll probably do some more of it in the upcoming weeks as I have another free ticket.

Agreed about the wild flowers, also it was very peaceful I didn’t see another soul until Millhouses.

I’m on an East Midlands flexi rover this week so I can go walking in more unusual areas. Yesterday I got the train to Oakham and walked the Hambleton Peninsula path ( https://www.hambletonhall.com/wp-co.../The-Peninsula-Walking-Map-Hambleton-Hall.pdf ) on the edge of Rutland Water. The peninsula path is a lovely walk of about seven miles, with great views across the water throughout, but the walk from Oakham station to the start of the path is 2.5 miles of rather dull road walking each way. For refreshments there’s a great pub called the Finch Arms in Hambleton village plus the Grainstore Brewery Tap adjoining Oakham station at the end of the walk. Overall a great day out.

Campsea Ashe to Saxmundham, 12 miles. We walked from our campsite to Wickham Market station, from where we picked up one of the fabulous East Suffolk Line walks, this one by-passing Thurston and Blaxhall and every settlement in between, all the way to Saxmundham. A pint in the Bell Hotel kept us occupied until the train whisked us back to the start and dinner at the Duck opposite Wickham station, before watching the sun go down on yet another lovely weekend in Suffolk.

Finished the Trent & Mersey canal today, with the last section from the badly served* Willington station towards Shardlow & Derwent Mouth before taking the path alongside the Trent towards the junction with the Erewash Canal (which I then followed for the mile or so towards Long Eaton station).

I suspect it might be one of the last rural canal walks of the year, as the towpath was already getting muddy in places due to all the recent rain, although I will probably end up doing something next weekend if the weather is dry based on any engineering works.

*I alighted from the 09:46, the next train for Birmingham wasn't until the 13:17!_

At the weekend I walked a small section of the line that exists from Exmouth to Budleigh Salterton, see link.

Due to fading light and having walked from Lympstone I didn't venture any further.

Having been to Exmouth numerous times, I never realised this line had even existed until recently.

Managed to do the Tissington Trail last Saturday, from Pomeroy towards Ashbourne. Some amazing views of the peak district, it's just a shame in my eyes that public transport wise it is rubbish. One bus each way on the route 441 at the northern end, even that skips the "Parsley Hay" visitor centre area near to the junction where the High Peak trail heads towards Cromford (so if I get round to doing that one I will be repeating the first 2-3 miles from Pomeroy towards Parsley Hay).

Probably one of my favourite disused railway line walks.

The disused railway is walkable (with some gaps) all the way from Feniton to Exmouth.

A few weeks ago I cycled the Tissington / High Peak Trail from Ashbourne to the end at Dowlow then return. As you say it is excellent. One problem though was the cafe at Parsley Hay. I’d been looking forward to cup of tea & a sausage sandwich. I know how to live!

I asked for the sandwich. Sorry he said I’ve run out of sausage. That’s ok I’ll have a bacon sandwich. Sorry I’ve run out of bacon as well. I studied the menu and decided on a cheese & onion toastie. Sorry he said I’ve got no onion..!! In the end I just had a cheese toastie & tea bag in hot water in a paper cup. I had to add my own milk. I didn’t realise until afterwards he still charged me the full price for the toastie even with no onion.

I may have been unlucky, but next time I’ll cycle down the line to the cafe at the Hartington Signal Box.

I tried to walk from Iseo to Paratico around Lake Iseo in Lombardy, but the segregated path proved nearly impossible to find, then waterlogged and I eventually gave up.
