With the withdrawal of 317s, the changing roles of the 379s and arrival of the 745s, I'm trying to make sense of the commotion that seems to be on allocations. From what I understand 745s are strictly limited to StanEx runs while the remaining 317s and 379s seem to be sharing roles now with both going up to Cambridge North, Hertford, and the Med Water shuttles. Is there a pattern in all this or are StanEx trains the only trains where you know what trains you'll be on prior to it turning up?

No, its a complete gamble. I went up the WAML on Friday and it was all 379 off peak, and all 317 on the peak but the booked traction changes day to day. I'd say a 379 is slightly more likely but still many 317s left. Only StanEx runs are guaranteed 745s.
