1M19, 18 40 Glasgow Central - Euston at a stand between Nethercleugh and Lockerbie, reportedly with 'a bogie on fire'. Following train, 9M62, 18 52 Edinburgh Waverley - Birmingham New Street has been turned back at Beattock and is reported to be heading for Glasgow Central, rather than Edinburgh. Northbound services are being held back at Carlisle or Penrith.

One very very hot (and rare) axle box fire. A TPE 397 is being sent to rescue the passengers from it, while I reckon it'll be a wheel skate job for the Pendolino.

Its lucky Avanti are running a reduced service at the minute, members of their fleet seem to be having freak accidents regularly recently.

While not statistically ruled out, any series of 'freak' accidents in a short period of time should be cause to pause and see if something is going wrong.

What other issues are manifesting?
A pendolino got stuck at Kilburn a few days back because of OHLE issues and I think it is out of use for the forseeable future. Then a voyager had a big incident at Polmadie depot wrecking one of the carriages, not entirely sure what happened but the pictures look bad.

Combine this with the landslip near Rugby and its not been the greatest time for Avanti recently.

I've just heard that the Pendolino has failed a wheel rotation test, so it definitely can't be moved until a wheel skate has been fitted.

Did most delayed services eventually make it to intended destinations?

I note that 1S82 (the 1557 ex London Euston) eventually made it into Glasgow Central at around 2307, some 128 mins late, after being held at Carlisle for more than two hours.

Believe the last 3 to Glasgow were terminated at Preston. 1M20, from Glasgow to Crewe was cancelled and 9M62 from Edinburgh to Birmingham new street was turned back to Glasgow. Which means 2 Preston crews stuck north and get to enjoy a taxi ride down the A74 or a hotel room!

Understand from a brief online news report in the Daily Record that there were 14 passengers needing evacuation from a location near to Lockerbie on the affected 1840 ex Glasgow Central service. No injuries were sustained.

Not surprising given how hot it got. Will be seized solid.

To be fair this is the only one of the freak accidents reported which could be a maintenance issue.

There was one pendolino which had brake issues between Lancaster and Preston quite recently also which meant the train was stranded and passengers evacuated onto another train.

However its just what you call bad luck more than anything. It's probably more unusual because pendolinos are usually very reliable and very rarely cause disruption through train faults.

So far, Avanti aren't having a good week

What happened the other day that a Voyager substituted for a Pendolino on a Liverpool Lime Street to London Euston diagram

I think that might’ve been the result of the Pendolino for that service being trapped in Polmadie behind the Voyager

1M19 is still stood just north of Lockerbie, blocking the up WCML.

It looks like Southbound trains are crossing over at Wamphrey to run on the down, before crossing over before the station.

NEW POST:

TransPennine Express aren't running anything between Edinburgh and Carlisle.

Both lines are apparently blocked according to JourneyCheck.

Avanti are running Glasgow - Carlisle shuttles non stop via Kilmarnock to connect with trains south.

Looks like this may be going on for a while? The last train to run south was 1M08, the 07:37 from Glasgow - Euston

Unit is being rescued this morning, aiming to be clear of the line by midday

Assuming the Carlisle thunderbird is being drafted?
Apparently the skate team couldn’t get skate underneath in the early hours so another team arrived at 8 this morning to try and get it under. Taken 3 hour line block then will probably use the 57. Info taken from poster on railcam

I would imagine that if the axle had been locked for some considerable distance there will be some fairly serious rail damage too, possibly resulting in an ESR prior to re-railing. This happened with the freight train locked wheel incident between Carmarthen and Llanelli a few years ago.

Generally, with hot axle boxes, if the axle is hot the wheel will still rotate, resulting in significantly less chances of damage to the track, this can be helped if the axle is a motor wheelset. In this case normally it will only be noticed through the rubber suspension getting too hot and starting to smoke, and on an express service there is less chance of it being noticed on board and more likely by staff when the train passes through a station. It is only when the train is finally brought to a stand and it is inspected, allowing the hot metal a chance to cool that the axle will seize. I remember one time a train at my old company was brought to a stand in the platform, and by all accounts skate fitment was as interesting as it could be having to slide between the platform and the train, whereas if someone was on the ball at the start of the incident (before the fire brigade turned up!) The train could have been brought forwards to a level crossing, making access by all necessary services a lot easier!

About 600 yards perhaps north of Lockerbie station around 15'' ago. I don't think it's going anywhere in a hurry.

But they are not used - reliance is entirely upon lineside hot axle box detectors.
This seems absolutely bizarre. Shades of the East Langton Meridian derailment in 2010 when the driver had received a hot axle box alarm, broken cardan shaft alarm, fire alarm and passcom activation but still re-applied power and delayed braking during his diagnosis process with the Train Management System screen.
