Potential problem with running a Crewe-Rugby service is the lack of north facing bay platforms at Rugby - IIRC they were removed when the station was modernized during the West Coast upgrade - meaning there's little scope for reversing southbound trains without creating conflicting moves.

Problem with extending a London-Northampton train to/from Crewe would likely be line capacity between Northampton and Rugby. Unless the New Street-Northampton frequency has been cut that section now has 3tph LNR, 4+tph AWC plus substantial freight flows as DIRFT is on this line

Rugby is bi-di, reckon you could probably terminate it in 2 by coming over at High Oaks onto the down slow to avoid the up side.

I can see Liverpool services are calling at Nuneaton for Avanti. Wow that brings back memories!! They use to call there regularly up until December 2008 timetable but since then are non-stop south of Stafford. In pre-Pendolino days most Liverpool services also called at either Watford Jct or Milton Keynes too. A few morning and evening services still call Nuneaton in the week with a few daytime ones on Sunday too.

During Lockdown 1 last year it was Rugby - Stafford using platform 2 to terminate and return at Rugby.

Or if you want to travel between the more major stations i.e. Rugby-Nuneaton or Nuneaton-Tamworth ?

West Coast line to reopen after major landslip

12th February 2021

THE West Coast Main Line south of Rugby will reopen tomorrow after Network Rail engineers spent more than a fortnight repairing a landslip at Hillmorton junction.
Trains were diverted via Northampton for 17 days while the engineers reconstructed an embankment 10 metres high and 40 metres wide, used 10,000 tonnes of stone to improve drainage, laid new foundations and installed special pins to prevent any future movement.
The problem is thought to have been caused by very heavy rain during Storm Christoph, and the line has been restored two days ahead of schedule.
West Coast South route infrastructure director Ellen Wintle said: ‘I’m really proud of my team for working all hours to get this vital section of the West Coast main line secure. Because this landslip was spotted early we were able to control the damage and carry out repairs quickly, reducing the length of time passengers and freight would be disrupted.’
Over the coming months the new embankment will be replanted so that it blends in to the landscape again.

A class 350 (5Z01 / 02) has appeared to pass the section down and back this morning.
