Next Monday i'm likely going to need a weekly ticket from Redcar Central to Middlesbrough but probably won't know until Sunday. As i'll be getting a really early train and the ticket office at Redcar Central will be closed then (in fact it's closed at the moment anyway) can I buy either from a TVM or on the train if the TVM is broken again? And does the weekly ticket require a photo, if so can this still be issued via the train or TVM!

Thanks in advance.

It's probably worth going to a ticket office between now and then with a passport photo and just getting a photocard made up as they don't cost anything. Weekly tickets can be bought from a TVM as long as you already have a photocard.

You will need photo ID, you can get this free of charge at any ticket office if you provide them with a passport-style photo.

Once you have your photo ID, you can buy a weekly season on the TVM, or else on the train if the TVM is out of service and the ticket office is closed.

If all else fails, could the OP buy an anytime day ticket on the train, then part exchange it for a season ticket and photocard at Middlesbrough?

That process is officially only for monthly and longer tickets, and is poorly supported at the best of times.

Alternatively you could pick up a smart card at the station (or order online) and load the season on that. No photo required for a smart card.

Didn't know that. What's to stop such a card (with a season loaded on it) being passed from person to person, for example, persons sharing the same household / workplace? :?:

The possibility of a Criminal prosecution will be enough to put many people off sharing their smart card. Assuming they've actually read the Terms and Conditions!

If only it were that simple. Different TOCs have different rules around that depending on whether the smartcard is registered or not.

Nothing smart needed. Got a photo ID done at Middlesbrough today, easy.

Northern (and I think TPE) don't require a photo for a registered card. I wasn't aware you could have an unregistered card for a season though.

I have several unregistered cards from various TOCs, and there is no restriction on loading seasons to them.
