I have been reading with interest the posts about the 442 supposedly going for an overhaul in January and here are my educated views on the matter, starting with a C6 overhaul itself

A C6 is by all accounts, a cosmetic overhaul, especially in todays modern world. In the days of the slammers, C6's involved the mandatory replacement of all door locks etc etc etc. This was either done at Eastleigh or Chart Leacon
Staying in the days of the slammers. Bournemouth had 24 units to maintain aswell as the occassional slammer. This meant a largely under utilised depot, so were given extra staff and then told to do the C4 overhaul on the 455 fleet, an on going contract.
The C4 overhaul is much larger and technically more important than the C6.
Slammers had their C4 done at Wimbledon or Chart Leacon {bearing in mind we are talking South Western side here}
Now lets move to today. The slammers have gone and Eastleigh works has shut, depending on who you talk to.
So combined with the reduction / extinction of the 458's, Wimbledon's fleet has been cut by 62.5% roughly. Also they no longed have slam door C4's or emergency lifts from derailments etc
Now lets move onto the main topic, 442's going to Ilford, an Eastern region depot. With respect, WTF does Ilford know about 442's apart from their MK3 similarities? {granted it's only a comsetic overhaul}
Now lets theoretically re jig the SWT maintenance system. Wimbledon now has time and resources to do 455 C4 overhauls. This leaves Bournemouth short of work, unless they do the 442 C6 overhaul on site?

GBRf have various 66's kicking about, but would prefer to haul 210 tons of train with 2 x 73, bearing in mind this would give the train a total of 1,200 hp once it left the southern 3rd rail system} ?
Anybody else still on the same wave length and come to the same conclusion?

GBRf aren't running it anymore, Freightliner won the contract. 47841 is stabled at Maritime today and is likely to run down to Bournemouth to collect the first 442 and run to Ilford. It is due for a 0943 departure from Bournemouth T+RSMD on 4th January.

Yes, a Duff, thanks Freightliner, makes a change to those EDs
I can't wait for the clag, once it stops at Clapham <D

Hmm, what was the point of SET sending 465/2s to Wabtec when SET had just refurbished the 466s by itself

Well it might do DC mode, just cos it was a railtour doesnt mean everything else has to follow the same way, it was probably on diesel that day because it was a tour and were kind enough for the enthusiasts behind to leave it on diesel

Oh right, so we've got an FL 47 out for the first one at least.

*Gets combined book out*

Bah, I've seen that 47. Not much point going out for it then. Humbug. Pish posh.

Oh, and for the record The Slash, I see your point perfectly clearly. If Bournemouth has the technology to do the exams theirselves, why not do it in-house? Save so much money...

But wait, I do remember why SWT insist on sending them to Ilford. It's because it's Stagecoach run, they've got the money and resources to waste in sending the 442s to Ilford for a bad job of fixing them up. Although perhaps they have a good idea for once, in that SWT fitters (bar the Fratton staff ;) ) don't seem to be able to get a unit fixed up properly yet, nor can SWT run their improved TT properly yet, so perhaps sending them to IL is a better idea.

The desiros are maintained under contract by Siemens at Northam depot, Southampton. Fratton depot shut as a maintenance depot in November 2004, but is now used to do work on the Salisbury fleet like upgrading the 158's they have just got and doing the 159 aircon mods.
During 2003, the whole CIG fleet recieved an interior overhaul at Fratton depot, this was done by stopping 1 unit a week for 4 days and nights. The work was carried out by existing staff supported by 1 contractor who specialised in trim.

Why did they require an interior overhaul? Fair doos they do get a rather lot of interior vandalism than most other trains, but with a very short amount of time left it seems a bit of a waste of cash to overhaul them internally.

Though I must say 1393 does look good on the inside.

Makes a change from a company just running down their stock before they're withdrawn.
