It sounds like a carriage rake number as in

43XXX NL65 43XXX

to describe the make up of a train

( A rake in this case being a semi permanent number of coaches coupled together to form a train.)

Pretty Sure this refers to the coaching set number (A HST set in your case)
NL Stands for Neville Hill which is were the set is maintained primarily
65 is the set number.

Another example is BN14.

Thanks,
Ross

What does it mean? What other codes are there?

Codes such as this are fairly rare these days, as they refer only to types of train which use a 'fixed' rake of unpowered coaches - that's HSTs, 225s and I presume nothing much else? Possibly some of the regular loco hauled efforts might use fixed formations; i.e Chiltern, the WAG express, possibly sleepers - but equally, they may simply use only the individual vehicle numbers and rearrange them frequently; really don't know.

Everything else now is a multiple unit of some sort, and so of course just uses the unit number (i.e 220 010 being a Class 220 Voyager, etc). Every individual locomotive, carriage and wagon anywhere on the network has to have a unique vehicle number of its own, and so even where 'fixed formations' are in use every coach has a separate number as well. And of course, despite that term 'fixed formation', coaches are added and removed all the time as required for maintenance etc. This isn't the case with a multiple unit, where individual cars are generally always together (with some odd exceptions).

NL65 is the rake on hire to VTEC from EMT to supposedly cover for refurbishments - although it spends most of its time on Hull - London

The Greater Anglia hauled sets use NCxx codes. The short hauled set as well exists as NC37.

Set has a fixed diagram as a) it is an 8-car set and b) uses EMT power cars so it ends up at Neville Hill each night.
Diagram is:
3A12 NL-Hull (ECS)
1A12 Hull-KX
1D11 KX-Leeds
1A33 Leeds-KX
1H10 KX-Hull
1J10 Hull-Doncaster
5J10 Doncaster-NL (ECS)

GWR HST sets are other OC (Old Oak Common) or LA (Laira). And the two sleeper sets are PZ (Penzance)

The first two letters is the depot code, the numbers is the set number.

Most East coast HST's are allocated to Craigentinny and so are set ECxx starting with EC51 and up to EC64 (EC64 being the former EMT set) NL65 being allocated to Neville Hill is the EMT set currently hired in to VTEC. The MK4 sets allocated to Bounds Green therefore carry set numbers BNxx starting BN01-BN30

I assume you mean 44024 at Old Oak and 44100 at SPM?
Yes I did. Brain slipped out of gear for a second there.

The Chiltern sets are AL01-04, and AL06. Why AL05 disappeared is a mystery to me.
I thought it might have had something to do with the complex jiggery-pokery that happened around the time that Chiltern had the power door fitted sets delivered, where one set was split to lengthen another three from five to six carriages (releasing a buffet car for a fifth set of vehicles that were delivered as a six car (+DVT) rake). The Banbury commuter rake has also been changed from AL02 to AL06 at some point since then.
