Been reading Modern Railways, and an article says that if the W.A.G express had all mk3 stock, due to better braking it could do unit speeds, so was wandering what gives certain trains higher line speeds? is it mainly due to braking?

Partly braking performance and partly the load the driving wheels place on the track - a DMU with the driving force distributed evenly over the train is much kinder to the track than a loco hauled service.

Lots and lots of reasons. The ones that have already been mentioned are all correct, axle weight is also a factor as is cab visibility and yaw/yaw damping. The list is very long.

Mark 3 coaches have disc brakes, Mark 2 coaches have tread brakes so that's why WAG1 will have better braking once the new coaches are ready :)

Where have these new Mark 3s come from?

Is there a secret reserve of them somewhere?
