If that's the pantograph vehicle, it'll most likely be an exhaust for the ventilation of the electricals - hence the dust being deposited on the bodyside.

Its to aid drainage of the pantograph well on the roof. When it rains heavily you'll notice water running down the side of the train through that outlet either side. Its usually sooty as it drags all the crap down from the pantograph well with the water and then dries on the side. Nightmare to remove. Our train washers cant even nearly penetrate it, usually needs handbashing to remove.

What's the arrangement on latter trains for the pantograph drains? I can't think of any other units with such obvious drains on the side of vehicles, do they just slope it off towards the vehicle end, or is there a neater integrated drain tube?

Is that a bit of the paint peeling off on the black border to reveal the units former strathclyde orange livery?

Its a warning line to stay below unless you potentially want 25KV through your body.

333s definitely have the drain at the vehicle end, 90% sure 331s are a similar arrangement.

Here on my photo of a 350 pantograph you can see a small hole in between the windows under the pantograph where water comes out.

Electrostars have internal drainage that runs through the body end cupboards and straight out the bottom of the coach. A much smarter solution in my opinion!
