My main lens is 17-55mm and I also have a 10-20mm.

I'm thinking about getting rid of the 17-55mm and getting a 24-105mm. I also want to replace the 70-200mm that I had to get rid of last year.

I currently use a 18-55 mm lens but I definatly aim to upgrade to a high mm soon.

I've got two lenses I use 80% of the time and the rest get a look in at certain locations. In order of use - Canon 28-135mm IS, Sigma 10-20mm, Canon 50mm f1.8, Canon 70-300mm IS. Best quality if I can use it is without doubt the 50mm, it only does one thing but it does it exceptionally well for a lens that cost £49 brand new!!!!

18-200 f/3.6-5.6 OS (away being repaired at the moment)
50 f/1,8
70-300 f/4-5.6
135-400 f/4-6.3
400 f/5.6

Also got a 17-35 f/2.8-4, and a 17-70 f/2.8-4, both of which require some TLC..

I don't have an SLR yet, but I'm thinking of using an 18-55mm, 55-250mm & a 50mm.

I should be going for a 55mm- 200mm when a nice price for it is found.
I don't really need a wide angle is the 18mm- 55mm is wide angle enough.

I be getting the 55-200mm £146.79 in Argos though as I am also into Planes I might get the 70-300mm but thats £391.29 from Argos :o

But at the moment I have the 18-55mm .

I'm considering getting an EOS 450D, with Sigma 18 - 50 and Tamron 70 - 300 lenses. Can anyone who has the 450D tell me what the bundled "kit" lens (the 18 - 55 with IS) is like, as I've heard quite a few bad reports about it.

Cheers

Olympus by chance?

Most of the time I use the Zuiko 18-180mm, I also have a Zuiko 70-300mm but I rarely use it at the moment.

Correct Sir.

I'm looking to get the 18-180mm myself, don't really have the need for the latter. Might get a 35mm too :)

Whats the 18-180mm lens like weight wise? Zuiko lenses are usually quite light, which is what I like about them.

The new(ish) 18-55 IS is reportedly a good little lens, especially considering the price - Don't confuse it with the rather cr*ppy non-IS version - That is rubbish!
It still doesn't have USM, and is a bit noisy (compared to a near silent USM lens) but no more than the Sigma or Tamron versions (Tamron's are usually pretty noisy in my experience).

Or you could spend a lot more money and go for the 17-55 f/2.8 IS ;)

I use the EF24-105L, the 10-22 EFS and the 100-400L. All very good lenses. Next on the list to purchase is the 5dMk2 and the 70-200L f2.8
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I have to say... the optics on the 24-105L f4 are fantastic and it's a brilliant lens for the majority of uses. I know a couple of people who have the 24-70L f2.8 and they wish they had bought the 24-105. You just don't get as much benefit out of the extra stop as you do out of the extra reach... and the extra stop can easily be compensated for by using a slightly higher ISO. The 100-400L f4.5-f5.6 is a great lens in bright light but is a little soft beyond the 300mm mark.... Plus it's rather heavy and is a pain to use for any period of time with the lens hood on the front. I don't use it as much as I thought I would and I suspect I would get far more benefit from the 70-200L f2.8 IS.

The EFS 10-22 ultra-wide is a great lens on a 1.6 crop camera but can't be used on a full frame one. I tend to use this one sparingly as well, but it is good for landscapes and also for getting nice wide shots of locos.

Hope that helps anybody who is thinking of buying one of these lenses.

I should be getting a 24-105 f4 L (providing my current one sells on Ebay), I'm hoping it's has good as I've heard it is.

I used to have a 70-200 f4 L which was excellent, so I'd imagine the f2.8 IS version would be even better.

You will notice the difference between that and the 40-150mm but not too much. Its quite alot wider which makes holding it alot nicer and firmer.

Its well worth the money, if only too stop having to change between the two "kit" lenses.

Your last comment is the main reason for me wanting it, changing lenses all the time is a hassle, especially if your in a hurry (turning up to locations when the train is approaching!)

Thanks for the advice :)

Just taken delivery of a Canon EOS 450, with kit Canon 18 - 55mm IS lens, and an additional Sigma APO 70 - 300mm lens.

We'll see how she performs in terms of railway photography tommorow!
