Morning all,

Wondered if anyone can help me with a couple of questions.

About 1996-1999 what stock would have worked on the line to/from Sudbury on Anglia aea and where would it have been based?
I seem to remember it being a DMU possibly a 2 car.

Thanks in advance

Norwich-based 156s, I think.

Thanks but it was a 1st Generation DMU.

For a short while in the late 1990s First Great Eastern (as it then was) used hired-in Class 121 "bubble cars" from Silverlink on the Sudbury branch.

Ahh now that is good.

I remember them being 1st Generation DMUs as a bloke jumped on as it was pulling out and had a row with a platform guy through the window.

Thanks.

Was it a Network Southeast class 101 during that period?

Now I know it was Class 121 units on the line I've looked on the 'tinterweb and found this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_121

The four units, nos. 55023/27/29/31, were based at Bletchley depot, where staff repainted set L123 (55023) into its original British Railways green livery. The others remained in obsolete Network SouthEast livery. In 1996, set L123 was withdrawn from traffic, and the other three were hired to Great Eastern for use on the Sudbury branch to Sudbury. These returned to Bletchley in 1997/98.

This ties in nicely as I watched two football matches in Sudbury in the FA Vase in the 1997/1998 season (late 1997).

Railcar says 3 units moved to the Sudbury branch in 1996, being replaced by 150s in 2001.

No, it was Class 121s, but I remember travelling on the Sudbury branch on a NSE 101 in about 1988.
I think I’m thinking that I’m younger than I actually am...

All part of the Anglia Railways v First Great Eastern ‘friendly’ rivalry. Anglia Railways terminated the contract for hiring one of their units, leaving FGE to scratch around for a replacement. The 121s were sourced and some of the drivers and management at Colchester put in a terrific amount of work to make it all happen.

Yes. Definitely a 121. I remember travelling on it. Think car 55029 may have been one of the cars used.
