What do you mean by "Specifically . . . the numbers" ?

Do you mean the frequency of service, which you'll find from the Operators timetables?
Do you mean the type of design, the trains' 'class' numbers?
Or do you really mean the specific train vehicle's serial numbers, which train-spotters collect (or used to), of which there will be thousands.

Because there is more than one operator, you might find practical timetable information easier to consider if you look at the National Rail Journey Planner, here : http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/planjourney/search

To guage the frequencies, times and durations of services from each station, my recommended method would be to use a WebTIS-based website like East Coast, put origin as, say, Hassocks, destination as just London and then it will show you around a dozen services around the time you specify.

It's also good for showing which fares are valid on which services.

Yes that is not quite as specific as I had thought.

I mean:

type of design, the trains' 'class' numbers.

From London Bridge-Haywards Heath and southwards will be a 319 or 377, and Victoria-Haywards Heath and southwards will be either 377 or 442 (Haywards Heath / Brighton only).

I have informed sources, and yes but not on the Brighton line.

You can find out which trains go to Lewes by looking at a timetable or the Southern website.

If by 'which trains' Dudes means class, they're all 377s except for a couple of peak-time 442s working to Eastbourne.

And for goodness' sake stick with the 377s, Dudes, because if you get on a 442 (the big ugly red ones) you'll end up kicking people's shins at the table seats, walking on a squidgy floor and falling out of the coach-end doors. Not to mention the ancient engines which enjoy breaking down...

Sorry! My gripes with the 442s again !

So if I get on at hassocks I would be on a 377 or the dreaded 422. Hopefully not too many of those at rush hour.

I wouldn't say 'dreaded' - I'd take a 442 over a 377 any day of the week!

Yeah, "dreaded" is a bit stong. :P

442s may be old and have very silly narrow doors, but they ride superbly, and have slightly nicer seats than a 377.

The ride quality isn't too bad - perhaps the best bit - but I find the seats hard, rather closely spaced and too small. I am a little under 6ft and of average build, so I am not exactly an extraordinarily large passenger, but I would really appreciate a bit more legroom and width to the seats.

Still, I'd take a 442 over a 319 from a seating and general comfort point of view (and in fact from many other points of view, too!).

Yeah, on second thoughts, they are better than a 319 and 3+2 seating in a 377 but not as good as 2+2 seating in a 377. :)

Hi, I am just about to move to Hassocks. I did plan on burgess hill / haywards Heath but opted to be in Hassocks for the south downs.

Had a lot of great advice on here so far, so thanks.

Has anyone got any tips for communiting hassocks to London bridge. I was planning on getting the 8:15 or the 7:20 I think.

Will I get a seat?
How about the return journey?
What are the trains like, 2+2 or 3+2 seats
Crowded
Delays

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

If the 7:20 is the 7:31 of haywards Heath then it is a 377 so a mixture of 2+2 and 2+3, this train is busy at haywards Heath, I am not sure if you would get a seat.

The 8:15 if it is the 8:25 from hhe it is a 377 again and the same seat type, this has plenty of room.

Both are normally 3 - 5 mins late and the journey is generally fine.

Let me know about what return trains you were getting as well and I will be able to tell you.

Great info. Those will be my trains.

Coming back would be the 17:42 , 17:59, 18:12, 18:27 and if I am lucky the 16:57.

I guess I will need to learn where to stand on the platform to get on the 2+2 seats. Or do you mean some trains are all 2+2 and some all 3+2 seats.

Thanks for the awesome advice

I thought they were all 12 coach trains on that line. Are the 377s 3 x 4 coaches?

Right, I am not sure on the 16:57 it is only an 8 car 377 but as with all trains that start at London bridge get there 5 - 10 minutes before and walk to the front.

17:42 a busy 12 car 377, get there early!
17:59 a 10 car 442, might be room at the front but generally a busy train.
18:12 a train I get regular a 12 car 377 normally room at the front, but 2+2 seats a normally gone a few minutes before.

All 377's vary with 2+3 and 2+2 seating.

18:27 a 12 car 377 FCC, avoid like the plague! Since it comes from bedford and is late and rammed, you are lucky to get on the train. My advice would be to get the 18:23 to Eastbourne and change at Haywards Heath, then you have more trains or pick up the FCC when it has got quieter.

Hope that helps.

Another option that I use if I miss the 17:42 is the 17:47 LBG to Bognor Regis which departs from Platform 9. (Again it is a 12 car 377).

It calls at East Croydon and Three Bridges, arriving at TBD at 18:21.
There is then a 18:30 FCC (8 car 319) which gets to Hassocks at 18:50.

Enjoy Hassocks - I lived there from the age of 5 through to 20 and my parents still live there. If you like walking (especially the South Downs), you'll love it.

Great advice, I always like to micro manage my travel.

I am really looking forward to moving to Hassocks, I love walking and the southdowns. I also hate the Waterloo and city line which (in three weeks time) I will never have to use again.

Happy days

Thanks
