Change Chatelherault to Ferniegair, after the original station which stood nearby.

I have already posted this in another thread elsewhere on the website, but it makes sense to post it here also, as it directly answers the question being asked.

I think it'd make sense to rename Blackrod to Horwich Parkway & Blackrod and the current Horwich Parkway to Middlebrook to better reflect the areas they both serve, and to provide better clarity for the geographical locations of both stations.

Birmingham International to Birmingham Airport (for the NEC). This I believe got as far as a costed option for the First WCML franchise that never was. I have seen its present name cause confusion a number of times with people thinking it's in the city centre.

Re Horwich Parkway I always thought that should be called Middlebrook too. And Buckshaw "Euxton ROF" and built in a more classic style!

Southampton Airport (Parkway) to just Southampton Airport.

Parkway makes one think the airport is quite far, yet it is opposite the station!

These won't happen but:

Woolwich Arsenal to Woolwich Central
Woolwich Crossrail to Woolwich Riverside
Maze Hill to Greenwich East (or Trafalgar Road)
Knockholt to Knockholt and Halstead
Bat & Ball to Sevenoaks North

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
A couple of Scotland ones:

Cumbernauld to Cumbernauld South Carbrain
Croy to Croy & Kilsyth.

Great Western Railway:

Bristol Parkway to Bristol Parkway for Stoke Gifford

Also, with the recent opening of Oxford Parkway, I would bring back the suffix "General" for the present day Great Western Railway station in Oxford.

Everything called --------- Junction to be renamed to something that reflects where they are, rather than the nearest bit of rail infrastructure.

For the London ones:

Beckhenam Junction -> Beckhenam
Clapham Junction -> Battersea
Loughborough Junction -> Brixton East
Mitcham Junction -> Mitcham Common
Norwood Junction -> South Norwood
Willesden Junction -> Harlesden (and rename Harlesden Harlesden West)

Watford Junction and Dalston Junction are trickier - I can't see anything obvious geographically. Watford Not Quite So North As North Watford?

One outside London because in a similar thread I was once asked what I'd call Stourbridge Junction. That would become Pedmore or Oldswinford - Google Maps doesn't make it clear which of those would be more appropriate and I'm sure people familiar with the area could deal with that better than I could.

  • Beckenham would get confused with Beckenham Hill and Beckenham Road. It would have to be Beckenham Something or Something Beckenham.
  • Battersea would get confused with the Northern Line station of the same name (which will open soon) and Battersea Park. I think Clapham Junction is perfectly reasonable, esepcially given how significant it is. Re-naming it would be worse than keeping it as it is.
  • I agree with Loughborough Junction. It isn't even a junction anymore. I advocate Loughborough Park.
  • Mitcham Junction is a junction near Mitcham
  • Norwood Junction is a junction near Norwood
  • Willesden Junction is a junction near Willesden
  • Watford Junction is a junction near Watford
  • Dalston Junction isn't a junction. It has never been one. Dalston Square or Dalston Lane may work.

One thing that might not be a terrible idea would be the main station in each city (except London obviously) being renamed "X Main" on the Germanic model.

Untrue, passenger services ran over the East Curve until 1944.

I agree though that the name has been inappropriate for the last seventy years.

Sorry, I should have been more clear.

What I meant was that in the current iteration of the station (from re-opening as part of the London Overground East London Line), it hasn't been a junction.

Westcombe Park > Blackheath Royal Standard, simply because this area is now pretty much known as this

Catford/Catford Bridge > Catford Central, merge these into one station, both are ridiculously close to one another

Kidbrooke > Kidbrooke Village

Peckham Rye > Peckham

Denmark Hill > Camberwell, Denmark Hill is a sub-district of the much larger Camberwell

Waterloo East > Southwark

West Dulwich > Dulwich or South Dulwich

Some Edinburgh ones
Dalmeny to Dalmeny with South Queensferry (or just South Queensferry). The station is more within South Queensferry today than Dalmeny and it would stop confused tourist traveling to North Queensferry.
Haymarket to Edinburgh Haymarket, it is silly to not have name of the city in the second major station.
Edinburgh Gateway to Edinburgh Airport/Turnhouse or really anything other than Gateway because people think it is parkway and get it confused with Edinburgh Park.

Personally i would rename all of the following stations:

• Ashford International -> Ashford (Kent)
• Bicester Village -> Bicester Town
• Birchington On Sea -> Birchington
• Birmingham International -> Birmingham Airport
• City Thameslink -> London City
• Clacton On Sea -> Clacton
• Durrington On Sea -> Durrington
• East Midlands Parkway -> East Midlands Airport
• Ebbsfleet International -> Ebbsfleet
• Edinburgh -> Edinburgh Waverley
• Farringdon -> London Farringdon
• Frinton On Sea -> Frinton
• Gatwick Airport -> Gatwick Airport South Terminal
• Goring By Sea -> Goring
• Harwich International -> Harwich Ferry Port
• Haymarket -> Edinburgh Haymarket
• Leigh On Sea -> Leigh (Essex)
• Liverpool South Parkway -> Liverpool Airport
• Luton Airport Parkway -> Luton Airport
• Moorgate -> London Moorgate
• Old Street -> London Old Street
• Sheerness On Sea -> Sheerness
• Shoreham By Sea -> Shoreham (Sussex)
• Southampton Airport Parkway -> Southampton Airport
• Stratford International -> Stratford North
• Walton On The Naze -> Walton (Essex)
• Westgate On Sea -> Westgate
• Wivelsfield -> Worlds End

Additionally i would combine London Kings Cross and London St Pancras together as one station called "London Kings Cross St Pancras" (without the "International" part of the name) and renumber the platforms so there are no duplicates.

Rhoose Cardiff International Airport > Rhoose Cardiff Airport

It hasn't been Cardiff International Airport for nearly 10 years. Saves a lot on the printing costs too

Regarding renaming or dropping the "on/by Sea" suffix, are those places no longer by the seaside nowadays?

Also, the station signs for Edinburgh Waverley already mention the suffix - it is probably the information systems that need tweaked.

The "By Sea" and "On Sea" suffixes are pointless as nobody ever uses them. You won't find any person or business in these towns who actually uses the "By Sea" and "On Sea" suffixes. The railway is pretty much the only place that uses them.

Does then naming of stations in this manner not possibly date to when a lot of the leisure ttravel by rail was to go to the sea? Otherwise unless there iis an alternative non-on-sea town or station tthe suffix is pointless
