The drug of choice in my working class area of Glasgow was booze.
Noticeable Class A drugs arrived in the poorer areas at the same time as deindustrialisation and unemployment.
Funny that.

Cannabis doesn't have to be smoked, some people put in cakes or other cooked food. As for the smell, I rather like it.

Cannabis tea is apparently rather nice. A friend of mine, a pianist, finds it very beneficial for her.

Laudanum was very popular in Victorian times, I believe it was a perfectly respectable cough medicine.

I recall a special garlic bread as a student ....quite delicious (and very amusing afterwards) - and "space cakes" are a well known feature in certain circles

Cough medicine, pain relief, and much more. Laudanum was relatively common-place by the 18th century, and was a staple of naval medicine chests in Napoleonic times. Coca leaves also took off in the 19th century, not least in the form of Coca-Cola
