I was wondering if someone a lot smarter than me could create a Poll to see which parts of the UK members live in.

Categories required:

1. England

2. Northern Ireland

3. Scotland

4. Wales

5. None of the Above

I would like to see if the Membership is roughly proportionate to the population of each part of the UK.

The reason I am asking is because I see very few if any posts from NI and this is supposed to be RailUK Forums !!

Going to Northern Ireland in a couple of weeks I discover the 1 day pass for travel I am buying is the same price as it was on my last visit four and a half years ago.

How many places on the mainland could say that , yet we hear nothing about it on here.

Thanks to whoever has the brains to enact this :p

ps I know there is a "post a poll" button but I dare not press it as I have not got a scooby what will happen.

I think it would be worthwhile if England was split into options for the regions, as in my opinion at least there seems to be a large number of members from the Yorkshire area, compared to some other regions.

I understand where you are coming from but you could go on and on sub-dividing various regions parts of the UK.

The object of the exercise is to draw some attention to a neglected part of the UK (on this forum) and see if we have any members there.

So many things are done differently in NI from the rest of the UK (Utilities,Council Housing, Insolvency) just to name a few.

A lot of the "Socialist Bretheren" on the forum would highly approve of the way they go about things. I need a resident expert to bat off.

I suspect that is because there is very little of them over there to discuss: two of the six counties don't even have railways and the network that does exist is fairly straightforward and unremarkable. Aside from the RPSI at Whitehead there doesn't strike me as being a terrifically large enthusiast community over there either.

The NI network also has far far more in common with the shared Irish network than it does with Britain's.

I appreciate that but we do have the Premier Part of the whole forum - namely the General Discussion Thread which requires some input from the Six Counties.

Indeed, I've never understood on here why NI topics are meant to go in the UK Discussion but the topics for the wider network its physically connected to go in International. I appreciate that if you go by titles then it fits, but as far as actual ease of access to content goes it's illogical to me.

(Before someone says anything, I'm sure I have mentioned this in person to forum staff in the past!)

England for me, but I've also lived in Wales as well.

I'd like to move to Chester one day, maybe in a few years' time that'll be possible.

Don't forget it's not just about railways - there are other forms of transport and more general issues being discussed.

In which forum? In most transport regards it is much more similar to the Republic (owing to the likes of governance and physical geography) than it is to the other three countries of the UK.

I'm English and live in England, Mrs Cowley is Northern Irish and also lives in England (with me obviously), so I have a bit of an interest in the railway scene over there but whenever we go over we're very busy doing family stuff. Have managed a couple of trips to the Ulster folk and transport museum and caught the train up to Portrush though. Will do more at some point.

Sometimes you see stuff about NI on here, recently someone posted about the semaphores being replaced.

I live in England -- always have -- nowadays, in Birmingham.

I'd suggest that Northern Ireland's under-representation on the Forums, is largely a matter of simple demographics: from some very rough and quick Googling, NI's population is only two-and-some million, out of the whole UK's population of 64 / 65 million. There aren't all that many people there, to yield a percentage of same who will be interested in railways.

And -- a theory of mine, re which (I'm not Catholic, and I may well be talking out of the back of my neck) but -- many of Northern Ireland's inhabitants are Catholic. I have the impression that -- for various reasons -- Catholics tend to engage in "fringe" hobbies as a whole, rather less than people of Protestant heritage, or of no religious faith; thus reducing further, NI's potential input here. As said: am just spinning imaginable notions -- maybe complete rubbish.

One can get a good idea from threads posted on the Forum roughly where a person lives and how many members live in that area. It is often dependant on the number of posts you see relating to which parts of the country in which incidents/stories originate.

The Loyalists/Unionists would mainly be into Football/Rugby whereas the Nationalists/Republicans would mainly be into GAA (Gaelic Football and Hurling). Until around a decade ago GAA was not an inclusive sport like Football/Rugby. I've heard some quite disturbing stories from some former Dublin workmates about being beaten physically by CBS (Christian Brothers Schools) teachers, for playing "Foreign" Sport, (Football/Rugby/Cricket).

Having a Railway based interest is considered a rarity over here. There is the RSPI and IRRS but the memberships would not be as large as many of the societies in the UK. Railways are viewed as just another way of getting around to most, nothing else. I worked on LUAS and to my knowledge, I was the only person working in the various offices I was based in, that had any interest, other than a working interest, in steel wheel on steel rail matters.

You wonder why there isn't so much discussion of Northern Ireland? Apart from the reasons already mentioned, chiefly in my view that Railways, as with many other things, share more with the Republic of Ireland than with Britain, there is less discussion of NI because not only does it have diminished political significance in London, wide-ranging ignorance in the media, but it also has just 2.9% of the UK population. Rather less than that of Greater Manchester.

I think there are more people in England than most of us would like to admit don't really realise that they live in the same country as Omagh, Newry, Lisburn or Coleraine.

It may not be 4 1/2 years, but I think a Metrolink day Travelcard was the same price in 2014 as it is now - £5. That's inflation-busting if you consider the increase in the number of services you can use it on.

I also note that at present, 83% of respondents live in England, which is exactly in proportion to the % of the UK's population that does.

I live in Clydebank, located within the West Dunbartonshire council area of Scotland. The closest major city is of course Glasgow, 8 miles to the west.

Have taken numerous holidays to England (mainly to Northumberland), one to Wales (Isle of Anglesey in 2014) and have passed through Northern Ireland twice (on our way to and coming back from a holiday in the Republic of Ireland), in addition to numerous holidays to the Highlands of Scotland over the years.

The best part: England.

One wouldn't want to live with the heathens in the provinces or principlaites

That'd be the provinces and principalities that avoided the heathen Anglo-Saxon incursions of the Dark Ages, retained their Celtic Christianity, and later sent missions to re-Christianise England? :)
