Why is Water Orton 30mph?

It's only 30 branching off via Nuneaton (40 on the down slow and 30 on the down and up fast travelling up). The platform lines via Tamworth are 75/90 and 75/80 (on the down and up fast travelling down).

Track geometry I suspect, the point work will be on an adverse cant so higher speeds probably put excessive stress on them at high speeds so it limits it.

Spot on.... taking it at 30mph with a heavy train in tow you really do feel the camber. 30 is plenty fast enough over this particular junction, and depending on which type of wagons I'm hauling I'll sometimes take it a bit slower... there's really no point in rushing here as once you're clear of the 30 at WO you're not far off the 35 at Whitacre.

It's a simple problem to solve - put it back to 4-track and split it into 2x Derby and 2x Nuneaton with the dividing junction being as close to Landor St. as possible. The crazy thing is that Water Orton - Whitacre was the original route, the 'direct' line to Kingsbury being built in the early 20th century.

That ignores the fact that there is still a considerable amount of freight along there, you need access to Lawley Street Freightiner terminal, and container traffic is expanding.

It does need to be 4 tracks through Water Orton itself though, an opportunity was missed by the recent resignalling.

If you mean the WMSCC at Saltley then yes, it is slowly being filled with more and more sections of the West Mids.

It doesn't even need that, it just needed the goods putting back in between Water Orton and Castle Brom, would solve lots of issues on it's own.

There is a plan to remodel the station, but I don't know if that involves four tracking or indeed anything that might be useful in solving this situation. But improving it too much would be pointless, as as said above, there are just more restrictions further up.

There was a plan to re-model it but it was binned due to cost, what you have there now is all you are going to get.
