Why no services between Euston and Stafford between 6-7pm?

If this is already been discussed in another thread, feel free to merge this.

I’m disappointed that Stafford, a supposedly important stop, has no services from Euston between 6-7pm. And this has been consistent for a while now. All the while, the Trent Valley stations like Nuneaton, Tamworth and Lichfield Trent Valley have good direct services at this time window. Both from Avanti and LNWR.

What caused this change? COVID? Or has it always been like this? And is there a chance that at least there being an extra service to Stafford in this time window in the future?

The extra service to Stafford will be via HS2 (which will be non-stop to OOC) and I do not see why Stafford should lose its London Euston service for an hour.

The 17:57 Avanti Liverpool service which makes a Stafford call would in non-covid times depart at 18:07. There would also be an 18:33 to Liverpool calling Stafford.

Is that 17:57 running in the path of what would be the 17:57 peak Euston - Lancaster service?

It effectively switches between the path of the 1757 from Euston to Lancaster to the 1807 Liverpool path at Stafford - effectively a combination of the 1757 Lancaster (Tamworth and Lichfield), 1803 Birmingham (for Rugby) and the 1807 Liverpool (Stafford and beyond). Not quite the 1757 path because of the Rugby stop.

From the May timetable change, the 1757 becomes Lancaster again, missing out the Stafford stop. The Liverpool departure is 1803, stopping Rugby, in place of a Birmingham service and then running in the 1807 path.

Understood, thank you. Makes sense now.

I like both Lichfield and Stafford. But I’m house hunting now and have to weigh up between short term benefits at the former and the HS2 future services at Stafford.

I don’t know if there’d be IC classic services between Euston and the TV stations, after HS2, even in the peak.

That’s a lot better. Thank you.

I would be surprised if there weren't given that that is part of the gain from HS2, indeed I think there's a good chance of a frequency upgrade. However, they are more likely to be like the LNR services than Avanti West Coast in terms of stopping pattern (even if they do use Pendolinos or 80x).

I hope that the journey times will not be as long as the current service to Crewe. 1hr39 minutes to Lichfield isn't bad, but it could be a bit faster.

I can manage slower journeys from Huntingdon, even if the service stays the exact same after HS2, but that's because it continues onto the Thameslink core.

A Pendolino with first stop MKC should take about 1h20.
