Hey all. Just before platform 4 at lincoln, there is a big curve, that causes a lot of squeaking on a Bus pacer. However the other two stations approched from this direction are straight through, with the bogey wheeled 15x units (158's 153's and 156's) So Im wondering why they choose to use this train for this platform, even though its not suited to it at all? And the Two other platfroms (that usually habe EMT units on them) could actually be better served by two platforms that are back to back ("All Passangers for EM services should cross the bridge) Are they Just ashamed of having some busses on the route? Or is it part of the franchising?

I'm not too familar with Lincoln but I'm guessing it is the Doncaster - Lincoln via Sheffield trains you are referring to? Perhaps that is the only platform it can use, or may just be the one the signallers choose.

In many cases there is a 'better' platform which could be used. For example in York some trains go from platform 10/11 when nothing will be using platfrom 3 (closest to the entrance) for a while.

Yes it's true that the majority of the Northern Rail trains go from Platform 5 or occasionaly Platform 4. It might be a franchise issue as East Midlands Trains do own the station. The main East Midlands Trains service runs from Platform 3 which believe or not is where the ticket hall is.

Station Layout:
Platform 1: Peterborough (East Midlands Trains)
Platform 2: Grimsby Town (East Midlands Trains)??
Platform 3: Leicester/Nottingham (East Midlands Trains)
Platform 4: Newark Northgate (East Midlands Trains)
Platform 5: All Northern Rail Services (mainly to Sheffield/Adwick)

I would imagine that it is probably down to the fact that the Northern services having a layover for about 30 minutes in every hour. Putting these services in Platform 5 would mean that Platforms 3 and 4 are vacant allowing parallel moves in opposite directions to take place at the same time. The same could not happen if Platform 3 was occupied, due to signalling overlaps on Platforms 4/5.

Taking a look at what happens, I see the 1406 arrival from Sheffield arrives into Platform 3, and imagine this is due to a departure to Newark Northgate at 1405, thereby allowing an arrival and departure at pretty much the same time, which again couldn't happen if it was routed into Platform 5.

Also the passengers must be pretty used to having 'their' train going from the same platform for most of the day every day.

So it must be for both historic and purely operational reasons.

I think they are just trying to hide their pacers behind 153's 6's and 8's ^^
