Regarding steam, another service on this route with multiple loco changes was the Cambrian Coast express. These were King hauled as far as Wolverhampton Low Level (then Shrewsbury after the mid 1950s) where manors took over.
I remember travelling on the CCE back in the 1980s; when it was an 8x of some kind from Euston to Wolverhampton (HL), a 47 from there to Shrewsbury and then a pair of 37s for the final leg to Aberystwyth.

Ah, the grocer's apostrophe lives
Please stop putting apostrophes where they shouldn't be... :(
Don't you mean apostrophe's? ;)

Seriously, I'd love to know why this error is so widespread these days;
a huge number of people of people on this forum wrongly use apostrophes
to denote numeric plurals, but why?

It can't be laziness, as it means typing more characters in a post,
so the only thing I can think of is that they see others doing it and
copy them??

To clarify, plurals never use an apostrophe, even numbers, abbreviations, etc.

correct - 1980s, class 66s, DMUs

wrong - 1980's, class 66's, DMU's

I must stress that I'm not judging anyone - I'm just curious as to
why so many people make exactly the same mistake with regard
to the plural form of numbers??

I think this is because numbers, like acronyms, are seen as abbreviations and therefore there are some "missing" letters before the "s".

I'm afraid that it's worse than that. After meeting - and almost arguing with - a teacher of English at a local school where I used to live she assured me that the use of apostrophes wasn't that important "as long as the kids could communicate". She couldn't seem to understand that without proper language proper communication is difficult - know what I'm saying like?

When it comes to the use of apostrophes the rule is very simple. They either replace missing letters - they're (they are), you're(you are)it'll(it will) or they indicate a possessiveness. John's apples were red and shiny, Michael's apples were green and dull. There's an apostrophe in John's and Michael's because the apples (no apostrophe because apples is plural) belong to John and Michael.

Another example would have been class 58's running down to Didcot on MGR workings.

Even found their way onto the 6O86 from Didcot to Fratton occasionally.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
They replaced Westerns on the Birmingham New Street to London Paddington services. Was it worth having services to Paddington and New Street I wonder?

50s also appeared with peaks and 47s on NE- SW crosscountry services, not to mention the Paddington to West country services and Waterloo to West of England services in NSE days.

50s appearing on the Brighton/Portsmouth to Paigntons in the late 80s were a breath of fresh air to those of us on the south coast!
