While reading the new white paper I found the following statement interesting:

"The government will announce further electrification projects in England, will be announced shortly".

Does anyone have any indication of what these projects might be? I presume it is independent from the current Manchester to Leeds project.

It also mentioned infill schemes to the new freeports, for freight.
It looks like Ipswich-Felixstowe is one of those.
Plugging the short NLL/WCML-GWML gap at Acton (1/4 mile) would be another, you would think.
What is not so clear is whether NR has done any planning work on any of these, or it will be years before the wires go up even if approved.

Full Transpennine (sans current Grayling gaps), MML, GWML to Bristol /Oxford, Acton Bank, Felixstowe etc.

Thames Valley branches were also cancelled, as was Cardiff-Swansea

Wouldn’t rule out Reading West-Basingstoke and Oxford-Bletchley if there is any form of serious commitment for International freight (although would require more dual voltage freight locos)

As has been well covered on the forums Windermere is being lined up as the battery trial location.

Cardiff - Swansea will probably be left with in the WA / TfW funding pile.

If I remember correctly, neither the National Park authority nor the Operator of Last Resort were too impressed by the cancellation of electrification so there may be a rethink, there.

The Welsh Government, which is who I'm assuming you're referring to here, can fund infrastructure if they wish to using their relatively limited resources, but railway infrastructure isn't actually devolved in Wales, unlike in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

And because rail infrastructure isn't devolved to Wales, neither is the (Barnett-calculated) money for that infrastructure.

The mention of electrification for England leaves one wondering what's going on here. On the one hand, it could imply that responsibility for Welsh infrastructure is to be devolved. But Mr Johnson is very keen for UK Government spending to be highlighted to encourage support for the Union. Or maybe it's just that there's no electrification planned outside of England, and that I'm trying to read too much into the situation...

Just 4 footbridges in the first 4 miles miles up the hill to Burneside from Oxenholme which would make the battery usage far easier with a much lighter duty cycle. (Charging just while at Oxenholme station is major challenge.)

North Downs, Uckfield, Marshlink would make the biggest and quickest gains in the former NSE area with the SWR Class 158/159 replacements as bi modes following.
