It was done on the cheap with clearances cut to the bone. Seemed like a good idea at the time but time has shown there were a lot of things cut too far.
I’m not aware of many problems arising, what’s up with it?

the track lowers to avoid bridge reconstructions have broken through the capping layer of the formation meaning the clay lining of the old canal is causing track quality issues. Can't tamp the track as the clearances are so tight there is no lift available. Expect some lengthy blockades to replace the track over the next few years, particularly as most are adjacent to platforms so if the track is lowered to improve clearances the platforms need work too.

Added to that there is the operation issues of needing an isolation before anything other than the EMU's passed are allowed onto the branch which isolates Corkerhill depot so routing the NWR monitoring trains down is interesting.

Surely those are specific issues with the Paisley Canal line (certainly the first one) and don't prevent other routes being electrified using similar principles?

Very interesting, thank-you. But it doesn't sound like Paisley Canal is sufficiently problematic that it is being replaced with conventional clearances and overbridge rebuilds, though? Is this on the cards at some point?

Unlikely, for now. It’s certainly not going to be re-electrified with the new standard of electrification any time soon.

So the DMUs that used to the operate the branch are no longer cleared then? By design the NR yellow Class 150 is not allowed there either then?

Afaik, dmus are ok, it’s freight that can’t be accommodated with the ole live, they can access as long as the ole is off and isolated

If I recall correctly the freight was to the Hawkhead oil depot. I don’t think this has operated in many years but they wanted to maintain the capability.

Will check the sectional appendix when I next get a chance but its certainly not clear for DMU's across the full route as the recording trains need an isolation when they run.
