Used this for several years. Totally free program from Microsoft who have now discontinued it and not provided any replacement. Can anyone suggest a similar program that is genuinely free as the Microsoft one was?
The Microsoft program is still available but only from a third party source charging thirty bucks for it. Not willing to pay that much for something that has been totally free from the original source.

That's surprising - I would have expected it to be on File Hippo or similar.

Is that it? (Tom's Guide)

Obviously I make no claims on the safety of said download. As it was free originally and now MS have discontinued it is there any reason it wouldn't become abandonware?

Unfortunately video editors are highly complex beasts and require a lot of maintenance, presumably why Microsoft have dropped theirs. I found it very unstable at times, particularly on longer projects.

Youtube has an inbuilt video editor for basic trimming and compiling.

Otherwise Lightworks is meant to be pretty good. Free to use, but Pro version available with more features. Might take some getting used to though.

They have a Windows 10 replacement in the works. Windows Story Remix is going to be included in the Fall Windows 10 update.

Each iteration has been "easier" to use, but thus had less actual functionality aside from just throwing videos together to share on social media.

You can't really blame Microsoft for that one though - they make what there's a demand for.
