Are there any ways to reduce the cost of a day return on the above?

1 adult + 1 child travelling. A F+F railcard would almost pay for itself on the day return, but not quite and my wife has a Network Railcard (used normally on Woking-London) so I'm not sure it's worth buying one though the Network Railcard has been running a few months already so I suppose it might be worth it to have an overlapping card.

Would be travelling Woking-Poole, then Poole-Wareham on bicycle, returning from Wareham by train.

You don't say when, but that line is going to be exceptionally busy during the Olympics so I'd guess probably not. There certainly aren't any cheap advances left and megatrain has suspended all bookings.

It looks like the sailing runs from 29th July to 11th August so it wouldn't be much fun travelling on those days.

I'm considering going tomorrow on a Woking-Weymouth Olympic ticket @ £15.70 each way using my boxing tickets (at Excel) for validity. Saving is only £9.30 for 1a + 1c, and it's a bit dodgy, but I like loopholes :)
