I start mine on the week after next at Northfields depot on the Picc as an engineer's assistant.

Your best bet is to contact a TOC or a depot near you. Sooner rather than later, mind.

Incidentally, if anyone would like some tips about arranging work experience with LU, feel free to ask.

Most TOCs do not allow under 18s to work as conductors. In fact, I doubt if any TOC would allow you to actually work ON the train at all.

There are also strict H&S rules surrounding work experience - I imagine they prevent you from working on moving vehicles in any case (I know that you cannot work on boats, for example).

Your best bet is to contact them yourself, but I suspect the answer is no.

I doubt you will even be allowed to push the catering trolley around TBH - hot water - health and safety.

Based on what you've said about depot work, you're looking at a station position.

I went with ATW at newport, i went in and asked in the booking section. They put me on tickets for 2 days and the rest of the week they put me on platform duties where I endured getting stuck on a manchester bound 158. However I did also ask EWS and they said if you write to us we will more than likely get you in - they didnt let me in after all!

I've had a thought - why don't you try a signalling centre? I know I'd enjoy that.

Well you're running out of options in that case. You can't pick and choose when it comes to work experience on the railway. You pretty much have to take what's offered. Don't forget, it can be a very dangerous environment.

yeh it sure is, EWS refused me going on work experience with them as most of their work is on the tracks and so I would require specialist training (well track training! ) :(

I worked for Tyne and wear PTE in their offices, I did proper work but it was probably a million to one that I wasn't making tea.

Surely you already know this. You did mention the fact that you were about to do work experience at the beginning of the thread after all :? .

Anyhow, the answer to your question is that you do work experience in year 10, ages 14-15.

GNER refused to Do it
MML said I could on the phone, although they replyied too late, and that was to say no.
Virmin took ages for them to say no
couldn't get in touch with Wessex
Arriva sent a no. but replied pretty quickly
First Said No

Ended up doing it in a Model Shop [plug] Kernow Model Rail;way Centre [/plug]

Well I'll be doing my W.E at skoo in around a year, so I'll also be interested to any more updates- but it sounds like it's very unlikely that i'll even get a station job (which was what i was planning on doing)

Midland Mainline certainly do work experience, some people I know have done it at Derby Station, one of them even got a cab ride on VXC from Derby to Sheffield and back.

I'd love a VXC cabride- I would like to eventually get a job on a 220/221- as a TM, but it's probablly v unlikely TBH.

Just a shame I live in the NW, not the NE.

Beginning of Year 11 for me.

I didn't do anything rail related though. But I had my own desk/PC and when they couldn't find enough work for me to do they let me just browse the web ;)

But I got to do a very wide variety of things, and the more stuff you have experience in the better IMO.

I personally wouldn't want to have done my work experience in a little shop, I feel I would not have learnt or experienced much from that. Worse, I hear some people did no work experience at all. If anyone is in that situation then you really should try to do something before it's too late.

I feel that work experience is important. Start applying early to maximise your chances.

I think im doing down the good shed evern though i help there anyway.

Not a good idea, IMO. Try to broaden your experience as much as possible.

May I suggest looking at heritage railways. I first asked Virgin about station duties but the 'couldn't fit me in' so I asked at the SVR and I worked as a fitters assistant for 3 weeks (I got an extra week they liked me that much) in the MPD. Engineers, fitters etc assistant postions don't tend to be heavy lifting work as they try to show and explain what they are doing rather than using you as a holdhall tea maker. One word to describe the experiance is FANTASTIC!!!!! I even got a cab ride at the end of the placment on 7802 Bradley Manor. That was the highlight for me. Good Luck and just remember to enjoy it, no matter what s***e they give you.

i remember coming across a guy at new street, he was 14 and was doing work experience with network rail. he was doing customer assistance and had worked in the control room/announcers office.

so there's another one i suppose..

(as opposed to the platform staff at foregate street who all look about 14 :P )

Well the nearest one around Blackburn would probablly be the East Lancs one at Bury. I'd probablly be able to reach it by train to Man Vic, and then Tram from there to Bury though- but £s & times would obviously be crucial.
