Yorkie, even if their were decent bus/rail connections at Barton, the bus service would still be quicker, and more convenient due to the fact that it is a direct service. As the bus takes one hour, even if you had a non-stop train service to Barton, taking 30 minutes, then a 5 minute connection, you'd be hard pressed to beat that time. The general public will choose the direct bus service every time, even myself as a rail enthusiast does. The only people who would travel via Barton would be those from Cleethorpes and villages along the route, for whom it could be a good idea to improve the service, but it would have to be done by introducting through fares, reducing fares and the like, as increasing the service would not be finacially viable. Maybe it would be sensible to alternate train and local bus services to Barton, this would prbably increase loadings on both, particularly if a joint ticketing agreement could be reached.
60006 Scunthorpe Ironmaster, in Scunthorpe, you have a reasonable link to Barton/Hull, it isn't really that much slower than the old 909 and at least you have Sunday services and a later service finish time.
Regarding Humberside Airport, I do agree that better transport links are needed, in particular from Scunthorpe. The railway is close enough for a station to be built in the future, and the is space at Melton Ross. I also think that the 2 are close enough to each other for a travellator link to be built. However, Humberside is a relatively small airport, and I can't really see people travelling long distances to reach it, due to the close proximity to other airports (Doncaster and Manchester in particular). Therefore, unless the airport itself could stump up the majority of the cash, as by supporting the X1 it clearly sees the need for a decent public transport service, I do not think it would be feasible. However, improved bus services, including a service to Scunthorpe, in ,my opinion would be feasible and would hopefully attract some people out of their cars, maybe if timed to connect in/out of flights and staff shift changeover times.
