I've heard XC are aquiring the cabs from 43061/75 and also 43313 for spare parts. Anyone know anymore?

What would the cabs be for? I don't know what goes on behind the scenes of acquiring bits from trains but I can't see them being acquired for spares as it would take a lot of work to swap HST cabs if there's a fault one - you'd delay a train for hours if not days.

Sorry, I know that sounds daft but it's the first I've heard of an HST cab being acquired - I'm not saying its not true but struggle to understand why a train company would acquire a cab. You may as well just have the whole power car and you have a Paxman VP185 power unit which I guess 43061 and 43075 are VP185's.

This article was from 2010, sorry. If this is the reason for the can acquisitions then why would it take 10 years to get hold of power car cabs?

I think you misunderstood - the picture in that article is the reason why, ditto this picture of 43300.

HST cab fronts are a fibreglass bolt-on component and are in scarce supply, meaning that if in the future one of XCs powercars hit an object on the line and the cab was destroyed or damaged, they'd lose the entire power car as a result. By obtaining a couple of spare cab shells it's a relatively easy (albeit not quick) job to remove the damaged one and put the spare one on and get the train back in service. The reason they're getting cabs rather than whole power cars is because XCs are (a) MTU units rather than the VPs fitted to 061/75 and (b) modified recently to work with the sliding door modifications to the Mk3s - it's simpler to replace the cab than the bring the 2 spares up to XCs spec

They're fibreglass casings which are prone to being destroyed when collided with heavy objects. I believe they've used all the spares so having some extras will be useful, it isn't a regular job to swap a cab but it's also not particularly unusual.

Scotrails 43036 is currently getting the cab from 43018 fitted to it after it hit a tree.

Didn’t 018 get a new cab fitted in BR days? It rings a bell. I know 180 did so maybe I’m mixing my numbers up!

This photo from 17th August 1996 shows 018 inside Crewe Works, undergoing repair. If this is what you are referring to.

How much of 018 is left now? I'm sorry to see it end up as a spares donor in a way as it was one of the last power cars I had on the GW as a 2+8, funnily enough with 185.
It was also on the very first 125mph working on 04/10/76. Arguably a more worthy preservation candidate than 43002.

I'd of thought that was 43180 as didn't that hit a 37 in Edinburgh (or get hit I should say) around the mid 1990s and was out of traffic for a while......

I’d say 43180 may be the one behind it in the photo with a new cab on. Given the photo was taken in August 96 and 43180 was released in September, I would say the photo is of 43018. Further, 018 suffered bodyside damage in its accident, which explains the bodyside condition.

43018 had two major incidents: 1995 Royal Oak collision with a pair of 165s and in 1999 was the rear power car at Ladbroke Grove.

Ufton Nervet was 43019 leading and 43029 trailing. Southall was 43173 leading, 43163 at the rear.

Yeah, found it as you posted. That will be why it rings a bell with @Neptune. Two Collisions with turbos in the same area. As 018 has always been allocated to the western region it won’t have reached Edinburgh to give that 37 its droop snoot

43208 and 43239 have moved from IECP to EHPC, joining the other ten XC power cars.
