I will be in York later this month, what type of train is the Harrogate service normally? The one that goes at XX11 weekday mornings.

It might depend exactly which service you catch. It'll probably be either a 144 or a 150.

I've seen nothing but 150's whenever I have been there recently, but as already said, it depends on what time.

When I've been there around 75% of trains I saw were 150s, and the rest was a mix of 155s and 153s.

Nearly always a 150/1 or 150/2 - but have seen 3-car 144's on early morning runs.

OK, thanks for the replies. Not sure I've been on those types before. Edit:- Come to think of it they had 150s on the GOBLIN at some point before the 172s arrived I seem to recall.

Northern uses all of its diesel fleet barring 156s on the York-Harrogate-Leeds route throughout the day: 142, 144, 150, 153, 155 & 158. The 158s are only booked to work early morning peak services, and the 153s & 155s generally worked coupled on the Leeds-Knaresborough services. Class 14x & 150 are the most common units utilised.

Most days I see the Harrogate service at York and as said, it is nearly almost certainly going to be a 150.

142's, 144's and 153's+155's creep up from time to time (I have seen a 158 on this as well!), but these are all very rare in contrast to the amount of 150's usually on the service.

Are 156s banned from this route ?

IIRC there are 2 diagrams for pairs of 150/2s, and there is a 14x (2) pacer diagram. The 155 and 153 combinations generally work the Leeds - Harrogate shuttle.

No they are not banned but don't work there any more. There are 2 fleets, one based at Allerton which work on the Western parts of Northern, i.e. Liverpool, Manhgester, Buxton, Blackpool etc and the Heatn based fleet which work Newcastle area, Carlisle and Cumbrian Coast. There is this gap in the middle and most drivers in this area would not sign them any more.

It was a 150 each way. Though there was a 155 passing and 142s were in evidence. Not such a bad train even though I'm spoilt with 165s and 168s most of the time. Knaresborough station was interesting, particularly the signal box set into the side of the station building. Loved the token exchanges too.

Knaresborough is a lovely station and a lovely town, just a pity there is not much variety from a rail enthusiasts point of view.

The 153+155s are generally on the Leeds - Harrogate - Knaresborough services (i.e. the ones that don't go through to York), but anything is possible with Northern!

Indeed. In West yorkshire you're just as likely to see a 153 coupled to a 150 or 158 as one of it's 155 'cousins'. Since the splitting of the 'grand tour' at Huddersfield they're also more common working alone than they used to be, particularly on the various Huddersfield stoppers.

Isn't the fact that there are more pubs per capita than anywhere else in England enough for anyone?

BTW the first train to York (and its return) on a morning is a 158
