I will be in York later this month, what type of train is the Harrogate service normally? The one that goes at XX11 weekday mornings.

Northern uses all of its diesel fleet barring 156s on the York-Harrogate-Leeds route throughout the day: 142, 144, 150, 153, 155 & 158. The 158s are only booked to work early morning peak services, and the 153s & 155s generally worked coupled on the Leeds-Knaresborough services. Class 14x & 150 are the most common units utilised.
Are 156s banned from this route ?
No they are not banned but don't work there any more. There are 2 fleets, one based at Allerton which work on the Western parts of Northern, i.e. Liverpool, Manhgester, Buxton, Blackpool etc and the Heatn based fleet which work Newcastle area, Carlisle and Cumbrian Coast. There is this gap in the middle and most drivers in this area would not sign them any more. Are 156s banned from this route ?
It was a 150 each way. Though there was a 155 passing and 142s were in evidence. Not such a bad train even though I'm spoilt with 165s and 168s most of the time. Knaresborough station was interesting, particularly the signal box set into the side of the station building. Loved the token exchanges too.
The 153+155s are generally on the Leeds - Harrogate - Knaresborough services (i.e. the ones that don't go through to York), but anything is possible with Northern!
Knaresborough is a lovely station and a lovely town, just a pity there is not much variety from a rail enthusiasts point of view.
