I'm looking for a York - London train to travel out 5 July, return 6 July.

Happy with any slower route, just looking for the absolute cheapest. Can travel outward any time on 5 July as long as the train arrives in London by 15.00 and return any time on 6 July as long as the train arrives back in York by 14.30. 1 adult, no railcards. Thanks in advance

OK maybe not absolute cheapest! A journey over 5 hours is probably too long even if it is slightly cheaper!

Sorry, I don't have the means to guarantee the absolute cheapest, but have you tried http://trainscanbecheaper.info/ ?

The cheapest it can find is:

York - Clifton (Manchester)
Clifton (Manchester) - Stone
Stone - Norton Bridge
Norton Bridge - London Rte: LM Only

which reduces the price to £62.80

It's quite possible this is the absolute cheapest, it is slower (especially as you have to get a bus to call at Norton Bridge!) but does appear to meet your requirements

It may be better value to split somewhere other than Norton Bridge, so that you don't have to take the rail replacement bus service.

You may find it more useful to search by times, you could specify some different via points, rather than searching for the absolute cheapest it can find.

The absolute cheapest often isn't worth the savings IMO but it depends on how time is valued, which is subjective.
