In July my partner and I are travelling down to Cornwall for a holiday and then back up to Sheffield for a music festival.

Is there any cheapish way to do this or is it going to bankrupt us?

Was thinking maybe York - London - Penzance via EC/GC & FGW on the way down and direct via AXC on the way back up for a bit of variety.

Best way is to make sure you're around when Advances go on sale for your journey!

I would suggest:
York - London (EC or GC Advance)
London - Penzance (FGW Advance or Super Off-Peak Single)
Penzance - London (FGW Advance or Super Off-Peak Single [Return if Single chosen at above stage])
London - Sheffield (EMT Advance)
Sheffield - York (Off-Peak Day Single)

Try to travel at times when you'll get cheaper Advances and be prepared to book as soon as they are release - probably mid-April.
