(note, I'm not talking about *withdrawing* stock, just being replaced on a specific route)

What is the youngest stock to be replaced on a particular route by other trains (whether replaced by younger or replaced by older stock)?

For example the 170s doing Hull - London can only have been a couple of years old when replaced by brand new 222s, which were again only a few years old before replaced by (older) 180s.

SWT's 170s were fairly young when replaced by (older) 158s, the Gatwick 460s seemed pretty young to me when they started coming off the Gatwick service.

(for arguments sake, lets say that we are talking about the same TOC running a fairly similar service, to avoid arguments about Virgin Voyagers replaced by TPE 185s or the splitting up of ex Central Trains as that was more of a DfT decision and part of a bigger shake up)

The Midland Mainline 170s can't have been that old when they were replaced by the 222s.

There was a 6COR used on the newley electrified South Eastern division for a year or two. It was made up of retired PAN/PUL stock so didn't last very long there.

165s on Basinstoke to Reading being replaced by 150001 & 150002?

158s & 170s being replaced by 334s on Edinburgh to Bathgate services, with in turn the 380s replacing the 334s on the Ayrshire lines.

317s replaced by 319s on the Bed-Pan line.
317s then replaced again by 321s on the WCML.

143s replaced by 142s in the North East
150s replaced by 156s, replaced by 158s on the North Trans-Pennine.

221s being replaced by 390s on Scotland-Birmingham services would be one gradually taking place at the moment?

Dangerous thing to say, but....According to wikipedia, MML had their 170s for six years. Hull Trains sub-leased Anglia 170s between 2000 and 2004, when they replaced them with their own 170s. These were replaced in 2005 by the 222s which were replaced by the 180s around 2008 apparently.

Also, the 322s had only been with ScotRail for a few years when they were replaced by 380s on the North Berwick line...

Gatwick Express? The 460's were on the line for a decade then merged with the 458's and 442's brought back but the word is they have changed their minds and are going to order new build dedicated replacements for Gatwick Express again.

155s being replaced by 156s on some lines after the 155s were converted to 153s.

185s replacing 175s and Voyagers west of the Pennines.

However, the shortest one I can think of is the 185s were introduced in early 2004 on Manchester-Hull services, to be reverted to 158 operation a few months later, ahead of going over to 170 operation.

Dusty Bins on West Anglia. Brand new and replaced by 317s. Think it was over DOO running and Look Back monitors?

Probably not what you are after but the Glasgow Blue trains lasted 6 weeks before complete withdrawal to be replaced by steam hauled suburban coaches. This lasted for a year.

Yes - same problem when they went to Bletchley. They installed all the mirrors and then had to take them out again...

Not to mention the class 334 banished from the Ayr Glasgow route in favor of the much more superior class 380. Less noisy, better window alignment ETC. Not that I don't like the 334, as they replaced quieter 311:shock: but over 40 years old so had to be replaced sooner than later I am a bit bitter .

Central Trains 170s replaced by London Midland 350s on the Liverpool-Birmingham run? Of course this is in part because the route was split and I believe XC still run the Turbostars on the Birmingham-Stansted service.

Class 158s on the Brighton to Cardiff service didn't quite manage one return trip as the first service demolished 100 yards of the Down Platform Edge at Shoreham by Sea.
The service then reverted to class 156 for about a year until the necessary clearance works were completed.

Just to add to this, Central 170's replaced on the Liverpool - Norwich's by 158's.
