1. the cumbrian coaster(barrow to carlisle). stunning scenery.

2. the tyne valley line (newcastle to carlisle). as above.

3. goole to hull. brilliant view of the bridge, indication i'm not far from home.

4. st erth to st ives. as the first two.

5. sheffield to manchester(hope valley). can only mean i'm going to spend a lot of money in manchester.

6. lincoln to grimsby.

7. doncaster to lincoln. nice little local runs in a dog box.

8. bradford to skipton, mainly as it's on a class 333.

9. barton on humber to cleethorpes.

10. gloucester to newport, via chepstow.

Agreed, but in general 'tis a nice route. My favourite parts are the sea wall between Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth then along the edge of Dartmoor between Newton Abbot and Plymouth. But I agree there are boring bits.

Not many of you have been on the West Highland Line then, because if you had I cannot imagine you would prefer any line to that!

And if you've not been, you simply MUST, as it's fantastic. Also it is still Class 37 hauled for a few more weeks! I hope to go again later this month.

My top ten in a sort of order:
1.)Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad in Colorado/New Mexico, USA - North America's Highest narrow gauge AND Steam Railway
2.)Bernina pass of the RhB in Switzerland Europe's highest non tourist railway
3.)Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge railroad in Colorado, USA
4.)Lötschbergbahn in Switzerland a amazing main line but private railway
5.)Aluba line in Switzerland again of the RhB
5.)The world famous Gottard Pass in Switzerland
6.)Oberalp Pass in Switzerland
7.)West Coast main line London Euston - Glasgow Central before the pendos came along

and thats all I can think of...

Yep, my favourite parts were Rannoch Moor and the loop around Bridge of Orchy - amazing! You can see for miles and see the line you're about to go on... then the line you've just been on!

Swansea to Paddington
Hereford to Paddington
Swindon to Penzance
Heart of Wales (HoW)
Newport to Crewe (yes, the Misery Line!)
West Highland Line (too tired to really enjoy it though, having had no sleep)

Umm, I've run out of other routes I enjoy!

-Trowbridge - Chippenham (ok not scenic but i enjoy it as my local line)

-Swansea - Fishguard Harbour
-And the best one yet had to be the Far North line, Inverness - Wick, especially when we did it in the snow!

[Eternal Traveller]

1 - Gõteborg C to Stockholm C - a delightful 3 hour 125mph cross-country trip on the X2000. Even better when it's been snowing.

2 - Malmõ C - Kobenhavn - the Øresund Bridge is truly stunning to traverse.

3 - The long way round from Berlin to Amsterdam - a 5-hour EuroCity trip allowing you to see the nuances of industrial and rural Germany, with decent loco haulage and coaching stock.

4 - Berlin to Prague - the scenery has to be seen to be believed, night or day. Truly stunning.

5 - London to Paris pre-CTRL - the difference between DC running cutting through Kent like a knife, the engineering excellence of the Channel Tunnel and more engineering excellence with the TGV lines once you get on the continent.

6 - London Paddington - Penzance - Brunel's billiard table, Dawlish sea wall, need I say more?

7 - London Victoria to Brighton express - what seems like a mundane commuter line makes me think of the Great Escape to the coast.

8 - Hope Valley Line - once again, truly stunning scenery.

9 - London Waterloo to Bournemouth via Woking and Southampton - all stopping past Woking IIRC, on a slammer one time near Christmas a while back, great craic with a guy from Donegal I could hardly understand, comforable Greyhound unit, made the three-or-so hours fly by.

10 - London Fenchurch St. to anywhere via Gas Factory and Bow Junctions - purely so I get to look out of the window and say 'that's my house!'

In no paticular order;

Bedford-Sheffield: Lovely scenery crossing many rivers, running through
valleys and flatland in places, very lovely on a HST or Meridian.

Loughborough Central-Rothley Brook: Biased I guess, but it's lovely going over Swithland Viaduct, incredibly peaceful on the 1.15 which stops on the Viaduct for 5 mins to allow passengers to enjoy the view across the Reservoir, and you also get nice places like Kinchley Lane and Woodthorpe Cutting.

Hope Valley Line via New Mills Central: Beautiful, especially at New Mills Central, and Totley Tunnel is absolutely amazing, so long as well.

Carlisle-Carstairs: I've only done this on a HST, but need I say more? 8)

Bewdley-Bridgnorth: Absolutely stunning scenery, especially when you are riding behind a Prarie Tank in driving rain with LNER Gresley Teak stock.
