I was talking to a member of Virgin Trains staff at Holyhead on Thursday, and she said that Virgin West Coast were running "one of the old trains" from Rugby at around 0600. She was sure it wasn't a 90, and said it wasn't electric.

Checking the timetables, http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/img/timetables/200705/VT5.pdf

Shows the 0620 Rugby - Euston, calling at Northampton and Milton Keynes Central.

The timetable states
"This service will not be provided by a pendolino train"

Anyone know anything about it?

That's 1R90 which is part of the diagram for the class 90. It then sits at Euston as the spare set before forming the 1651 to Birmingham.

Perhaps the person who saw the train at Rugby, just noticed the DVT (if it runs with one?), noticed it didn't have a pantograph, and assumed it couldn't be an electric train, due to the lack of a pantograph.

It'd be a bit silly to say 1820 off Euston when the last time I saw the set was on Wednesday standing at New Street at 1850 now wouldn't it :)

Brain like a leaky sieve there boy!

Why not change on to the 90 next time

I would love to, but there's unfortunatley no cheap tickets on the train which the 90 worked.

Also, I would've been going the wrong direction from Rugby anyway, as I went to Preston on Friday night.

Believe it or not, RUK members, I always try to get on an HST or 90 etc, instead of a Voyager/Pendo, if there is one on the same/similar viable route, which wouldn't cost me alot more than the Voyager/Pendo option.

I am planning on going on the Manchester to Birmingham class 90 diagram sometime this August when I'm off, and possibly also bash some MML HSTs, as I'm very impressed with the great value First Class advance fares which MML seem to be offering.

I'd really like to travel GNER (HST) one way (along the ECML, York-Kings Cross), and St Pancras-Sheffield/Leeds/York the other, but GNER first fares are unbelieveably expensive.

The reason why I'm angry about GNER's higher fares in FC, is because they do a very similar complimentary service on HSTs, than MML.

Then, uhh, go standard? It's a different operator - hence different fares!

I think I know why different TOCs charge different fares!
It's just that I'm thinking that GNER could/should perhaps try to compete with MML, seeing that passengers who don't mind the difference in journey times will probably use MML, and save money.

But what about the fact that the chances are that Stagecoach are likely to win East Coast with Virgin and therefore won't care about how much mone they get?

MML= Cheapest Advance standard single= £7
Cheapest Advance First Class single= £14

GNER= Cheapest Advance Standard Single= £11.25 (Very reasonable £4.25 difference)
Cheapest Advance Standard Single= £36.50 (£22.50 more!)

** The route I have used is Leeds to London (Kings Cross for GNER, St Pancras for MML)**

Even if Stagecoach/Virgin win the East Coast franchise they'll still compete, as the Midland Mainline franchise will be solely owned by Stagecoach AFAIK, so they'll get a higher percent of the income than that on the East Coast franchise.

voyagerdude220 - you seem to have a 'requirement' to travel first class everywhere. To be honest, first class isn't all that good. Standard class can certainly meet your requirements in ways - for instance the FC seating on FGW HSTs I'd say isn't as good as the SC seating.

Remember, GNER operate a far quicker service. 2h 20mins via the ECML, or nearly 3 and a half hours via the MML. One strange thing I noted about the slowness of MML, you can leave Leeds 1 minute before the MML service, go via York, and still get to London 40 minutes before MML ....

Ok, I didn't realise it was such a huge difference TBH, but still think that GNER FC advance fares are quite expensive.
(If they accepted a railcard discount on their cheapest range of FC tickets like VT though, it would be a very good, reasonable price).

Edit: What does the "Retail Service ID" mean, as I haven't seen it before?
I know VXC have VT numbers on Voyager displays, but haven't seen that kind of ID on a journey planner before?

Not sure why it's on the journey planner but it's one of the things I had to quote when phoning RailGourmet at Sheffield.

voyagerdude220 - the concept behind AP fares, certainly from my point of view is to allow cheap train travel for those not entitled to railcards or whatnot. It certainly isn't designed for businesses to reduce money either (where they mainly still buy FORs where required).

The fact that you must travel First Class is quite patronising and the way you EXPECT to pay near nothing to travel in First. In some cases a lot cheaper than Standard. First Class is a generally improved service and for that reason it is more EXPENSIVE so don't moan about GNERs AP fares being 'expensive'. FC is not a 'reasonable price' market and just beacuse Vimin has such a massive amount of First Class on their trains in comparison to standard meaning they can sell First Class tickets as cheap as dirt does not mean other operators can. The idea of First Class is for businesses as stated who don't generally care what they have to pay. It's not a market to encourage people to travel by rail. Its for the people that need it everyday and that once in a while treat. My impression is you travel often and always cheaply in First Class. I can't stop this but this isn't how First Class is meant to be and that is why some operators charge large amounts of money. I can't see there being a massive amount of traffic in First Class from London on MML.
