Quite a busy month for you Kite :) I've now finished for 2017 as far as I'm concerned, nothing left to do and, to be honest, almost no time whatsoever to do much anyway. Not that it bothers me, Alicante is not far away!

It's not been as busy as previous months with having the last 2 Sundays relaxing at home instead of heading out to the capital.

Wonders why THAT 350 was included...

As it can certainly shift on the WCML between Stafford & Crewe ;)

The rear coach looked busy (as it was the one closest to the platform entrance), yet the front coach had plenty of spare seats. It be the wisdom of 'normals' (like at Shrewsbury when the pair of 158s rolled in on platform 7, large crowd gathered around the front coach, completely ignoring the remaining 3 coaches)

Agreed! I'm quite glad that Shippea Hill is nowhere near the top 10, got a bit fed up hearing that name everywhere this summer
Give it a couple years and it will be back in the bottom 10, similar to Combe Junction.

No doubt there will be mass boarding at Barry Links next, with everybody alighting at Golf Street to boost numbers

I do think it is rather sad to do that. As it does not give a true reading. Fair enough visiting to have a look around. But just getting a massive group of people for the purpose of boosting I think is wrong.

Anyhow I came home via Paddington earlier (mixed bag in London getting 1 700/0 on the Thameslink core and 1 more out of Kings Cross). No particular reason for going via Paddington

Ah that feeling you get when you’re falling behind with reading trip reports due to being ridiculously busy with work...
As always Mr Kite some very enjoyable reads there.
The trip to Scotland looked great and I rather enjoyed the wistful glimpses of the sea also.
Nice to see that after clearing all the mainland shacks you haven’t taken up pottery or butterfly collecting .

It’s taken me two nights to catch up on everyone’s reports and I’m sure you’ll be pleased to know that you were the first read of the second night. Now if everyone could just stop going to interesting places for a couple of weeks it really would help... ;)

Today I've been mainly 'slumming' it in standard class on a BLS tour

I had to do a double take at Reading this morning to make sure I had the right coach letter as I wasn't expecting that.

Made for a better day as the seats are far more superior than the bench seating found in Mk1s.

2nd December – The Christmas Brush

It was time for my next railtour, a nice lazy day trip to Reading for The Christmas Brush tour being ran by the Branch Line Society, as the name suggests the tour was being hauled by some classical 47s covering various parts of the Great Western, and I had nothing better to do I decided to book up. With a departure of 07:45 from Reading gave me a 05:56 start, so a nice early morning chilly walk to the station (not as cold as earlier in the week as the cars weren’t iced over). 159005 soon arrived to take me out of the cold air to Basingstoke where it was a short connection to 166204 to take me to Reading, where I exited the station to pick up some supplies for later in the day.

Half an hour (or so) later I retuned to the station with the sound of Mk1 brakes, the sound of the arrival of the ECS for the tour from the West Coast Railways Company area at Southall, and as expected it was 47245 at the London end, and 47760 on the country end, both winners on grounds that I’ve only ever* had 2 other 47s and they were on the Northern Christmas special a few years ago (*I say ever but I have vague memories of catching loco hauled services when I was very young so a 47 might have featured). On walking down the carriages looking for my coach I was sat in, I noticed an out of place Pullman Coach with a letter “E” in the window, and after returning to photograph the rear loco I did a double check with my e-ticket and I was sat in coach E, the quite nice 1960 ‘Parlour Second’ Topaz carriage.

Basically a Mk1 First Class carriage, but with even more comfortable seating, and self-closing doors at the end of the carriage, certainly was a bit of a shock as I was expecting to be sat on one of those awful Mk1 bench seats which require use of my cushion to get comfortable. I was on a table of 4 although one person shifted away to an empty standard class coach as it was a late addition for any “pay on the day” customers, and as it the usual with tours it felt like I was one of the youngest on board (I fear for the future of railtours, firstly the price keeps increasing and secondary the average age of those who tend to do tours).

Anyhow, onto the route itself, a nice easy first leg towards Paddington, going via the Maidenhead loop into platform 5 at Maidenhead, Slough Up Goods Loop & Dawley loop (between West Drayton & Hayes underneath the new Heathrow flyover). A couple of the loops weren’t available (Hayes loop had a freight train in it, and the points had failed on Hanwell Bridge) so as a bonus the tour got routed across the ladder before Southall to go via the “Up Brentford Siding” behind the station, causing chaos as the train was meant to have waited in Hanwell Bridge for a passenger service to pass before calling at Hanwell to pick up some passengers. After Hanwell the tour turned left onto the Greenford branch (scoring the west side of the triangle), before turning right after South Greenford onto the single track line towards Paddington (another bit of baker track scored). A little weave around the reception lines at Old Oak Common (sadly the flyover was out of use due to engineering works), and into Paddington to pick up more passengers.

10 or so minutes later, 47760 was in charge for the first time of the day, back out weaving via the new Crossrail depot entry lines before heading back up towards Greenford, pausing alongside the station (as I spotted the remains of the former platforms and some old track when this line was used more regularly). 47245 was back in control going around the other side of the triangle to head back towards Hanwell, pausing briefly at Southall for a crew change (and to pick up a couple late running passengers caught up in the WCML issues), before carrying out west via Hayes Loop, Langley loop, Slough platform 5, Maidenhead platform 4 & finally the Kennet Bridge loop outside Reading before dashing through non-stop (certainly that felt strange going non-stop through Reading), taking the Festival chord underneath the flyover and a nice run with 47245 opening up along the main lines until Didcot Parkway, before carrying on to the NR limit on the semi disused Milton Freight sidings.

Bit of a farce at Didcot Parkway heading back out, but we were put out in front of a stopper with 47760 back in charge for the run back towards Reading to pause in the Passenger loop near the depot (spotting 387170 & 387171 in the depot looking very shiny). The train took the West curve for a fast run via Reading West, pausing in Ufton goods loop, carrying on taking the platform 3 loop at Newbury Racecourse for a 15 minute break at Newbury for pathing reasons. We got back moving and carried on heading west via Hungerford, the next bit of new track for me was the Down Goods Loop at Woodborough before heading into Westbury station where a planned 20 minute break turned into a bit of a farce.

47760 at Newbury

Basically 47245 wasn’t feeling very well, so West Coast wanted to turn the set so 47760 would continue back towards London, so it was up to Bradford Junction where the single track line towards Chippenham branches off, causing a bit of chaos, but eventually we got back on track and via the Westbury north curve, running 40 minutes late, making some of the time up due to pathing as Woodbrough Up goods loop & Hungerford Passenger Loop was scored but sadly the booked weave around Newbury Racecourse & Theale loop was cut out (the weave didn’t bother me, but I believe the goods loop at Theale shows in Baker), the good thing is that the late running was reduced to 10 minutes at Reading (with a HST right up the rear). The carriage was quite warm, as the train took the underpass at the eastern end of Reading to gain access to the Waterloo lines for a fast run, doing a little weave at Ascot going via platform 2, but it was another 5 stations into my book for running non-stop through.

After Feltham the train turned left onto the Hounslow loop, before turning left after Brentford to take the freight line towards South Acton where due to pathing allowances we were back on time for the short run pausing briefly at Acton Central to change from DC to AC… Wait this is a 47, not a 378, how silly of me. The train took a left onto the Dudding Hill line, with the sound of the top of my pen coming off as the train beared left at Neasden Junction to join the Chiltern line for a run towards South Ruislip for one final reversal, with the smokey 47245 back in charge for the run back towards Greenford, going back via South Greenford taking the left fork towards Ealing Broadway, via the Acton dive under, for another little weave around the Old Oak Common depot reception lines (and doing a bit more of the Crossrail lines).

Arrival into Paddington was a couple minutes late, but that was down to waiting for a platform to become available. I said farewell to the train and headed to the Bakerloo line with 3261/3566 taking me to Baker Street for an unusually long 5 minute wait for 96111 & 96112 to take me to Waterloo, swinging via Tesco for something to eat before purchasing a single ticket to Basingstoke, and taking up a seat on 159016 & 159015 forming the 20:20 towards Axminster, sitting back to watch something on my tablet before a short internet session.

A couple new locos for my book, a bit of new track at the Baker level, a few more loops at the Quail level, plus some mince pies.

But here be a couple pictures of the locos in charge of the tour
47245 at Reading - - 47760 at Reading

They look good, but not as nice as
800010 & 800012 at Reading ;)

A nice little tour that.
I'm not sure I agree that the 800s look better than the 47s, though.
47403 may well be along at some point to give his opinion :)

3rd December – A Sunday day trip to London

Truth be told I didn’t have the best of weeks, so I didn’t fancy another lazy Sunday not doing a lot around the house so after the tour on Saturday I sat down on the laptop and worked out a rough plan to recover a couple branch lines within the London zones which I hadn’t been down in a couple years, plus scoring a couple little bay platforms. When playing with BR Fares I noticed that I can save money by splitting at Basingstoke and benefit from not having an evening restriction (the downside being I wouldn’t be able to use the Andover fast services.

Anyhow, to the trains! A short walk to the station, purchasing my tickets for the day before taking up a seat on 159006 which was leading 159019 on the first stopping service towards Waterloo, I sat in the front with the theory that it would give easier access to the subway at Clapham Junction in order for me to pay a quick visit to Sainsburys for a bacon sandwich, my plan going into the bin as the 159s crossed over to the slow lines after Wimbledon to pause on platform 10 at Clapham Junction, where I alighted for a short walk back along the platform to access the subway

159006 at Clapham Junction

My mission however was a success as I managed to purchase a bacon sandwich for a late breakfast, mmm bacon (in the style of Homer Simpson). Next up was a trip to the Southern platforms for 377162 & 377412 to take me down south, they were bound for Bognor and I alighted at Purley for the sole reason of an easier platform change, as I made my way across to platform 6 for the next Tattenham Corner service. I have never arrived into Tattenham Corner by train, the sole use of this station was back in February 2014 after walking there from Epsom Downs, the last time on this branch was back in September 2015 when I had my little bike to visit the shacks.

455816 rolled in, as I took up a seat in the motor coach of a quiet train, as I had forgotten how rural this branch line gets, it even has a couple foot crossings on, the sky was grey, with light misty rain, as the 455 rolled into Tattenham Corner, the end of the line arriving into platform 2, with several other 455s dotted around the station and in sidings outside (along with a pair of 377/6s), taking the day off. After a brief look around & a couple pictures I took up a seat on the opposite side of the 455 to wait for departure

455837 & 455816 at Tattenham Corner - 455s at a misty Tattenham Corner

Needless to say the inbound working was busier than the outbound working, as I bailed at Purley for 455825 running a couple minutes behind from Caterham for a fast run to the south of East Croydon for the usual crawl waiting for a platform. Some good motor noise on the fast run via Purley Oaks, next up for me was a train bound for East Grinstead, the platform screen was saying “formed of 9 coaches” so I had it down as being a triple 377/3, so I was surprised 10 minutes later when 377111 & 377603 rolled in, I believe the first time I’ve had one of the original 377s paired up with one of the newer 377s. I decided against the comfortable seats on the 377/1 for a plug socket on the /6 for a quick boost of electric on the run down to Oxted, being surprised to see a 171/8 mostly in the bay platform there.

171803 mostly in the bay platform at Oxted

You can probably see why I said mostly in the bay, as bay platform 3 can only hold 3 coaches, as I took a seat in an empty front coach (which remained empty until Crowborough, where due to late running of the previous Uckfield train (another 171/8) it got turned around early leaving around 10 passengers waiting for 30 minutes. A decent little run down the Uckfield branch, another nice little rural feeling branch, a bit of speed here & there, as I spent the trip looking at those nice platform extensions which were installed in late 2015 time to allow use of triple 171s during the peak times. Anyhow on arrival at Uckfield I took a fast walk to a nearby Tesco for lunch before returning to the 171, once more taking up a seat on the opposite side for some more walking of the world going past.

171803 at Uckfield

Arrival into Oxted was a couple minutes late (caused by the other 171 being late departing Oxted due to a late East Grinstead service in front), as I looked at a map, as I had forgotten how close Whyteleafe station was to Upper Warlingham, and the timings worked out (I would have roughly 11 minutes to walk the short distance, to put myself 30 minutes ahead of my plan). The next Victoria service rolled in formed of a nice low density 377106 paired with a horrid high density 377129 (no prizes at guessing which unit I sat in) for the short run via the tunnels to reach Upper Warlingham for a short distance walk (took me less than 5 minutes) to reach Whyteleafe on the Caterham branch, even having time to picture the next London service:

455823 departs Whyteleafe

The Caterham branch was another long term absence from my haulage log, last time I visited Caterham was on a wet Saturday in February 14, the last time on the branch was in September 15 for the shacks, a couple level crossings on another rural branch in outer zone 6 with 455817 taking me to Caterham (like Tattenham Corner, the station had several 455s around being stabled), using platform 2 at the Cat.

455817 & 455835 at Caterham

After another quick look around (nothing much to report other than a Waitrose near by), I boarded 455817 once more (motor coach once more) for the fast run back to East Croydon, for a short wait before a busy 377455 rolled in to take me to London Bridge on a fast service. Noting that a lot of the boards covering up the current closed part of the underbelly have been removed exposing just how large the underbelly will be next month when it is opened up, as I took a short walk up to the South Eastern platforms for a short wait for 376036 to take me to Waterloo East where after a quick PNB I walked over to Waterloo main with a couple ideas. The main one was a trip to Feltham on a Staines bound pair of 450s for some mileage, so it was onto a busy 450089 & 450566 on a semi-fast run to Feltham (emptied out at Richmond), a brief wait for 450016 & 450035 to take me to Twickenham before 455856 & 455873 took me to Whitton for no reason other than for a time wasting move

455856 at Whitton Station

Back to Twickenham (which seems to be having a lot of work done to it, I suspect the track for the old bays will be ripped up with the bays filled in at some point) on 458531 & 458510 before the main reason for heading out this way, mainly for the Sunday only* service which makes use of the bay platform at Kingston (*other than the 00:18 Waterloo to Kingston service during the weeks, plus an early morning service on Saturday mornings), which was formed of 455742 & 455721 reversing at Twickenham before carrying on onto the Kingston loop. I was surprised the guard didn’t mention that for “passengers wanting onward connections to London should change at Hampton Wick and wait on the same platform” to save those passengers having to use the subway at Kingston to get from platform 1 to platform 3. But at long last the bay platform is done, and it looked like a pair of 455s are too long for it

455742 at Kingston Station 455721 at Kingston

Anyhow I was surprised at how busy my next move was, 455742 & 455721 was full & standing after New Malden, I would expect to see trains heading away from London to be busy with shoppers heading home, but not heading into London. Anyhow I was lucky to get a seat for the run to Waterloo, with my final bit of 455 motor noise for the trip, as I headed across to board the 17:15 Exeter service which this evening was formed of 159021 & 159017 (another 159 was in the platform, but I suspect that would form the 17:45 Salisbury service), which due to the issues at Paddington was slightly cosy (but needless to say an Macbook/iPhone user decided that his bag deserved a seat more than another passenger). The train emptied out a bit at Basingstoke for those passengers wanting Reading to play the “how many passengers can you fit on a 2-car 165 challenge”, but it was still quite full, even after Andover. I believe the rear unit was detaching as per normal at Salisbury, however to cope with the extra load a 158 was getting attached to the front, so fair place to SWR.

Apart from the crowds, it was a decent run back to Grateley, where I got a lift home as it had started to rain once more. I would say it was a productive day but I didn’t score anything other than a couple bay platforms, but it was a nice varied day in London, no LU hunting as that will probably wait until the new year before I resume hunting, although I might have a short 95 stock hunt on Saturday morning due to having 75 minutes to reach Euston from Waterloo as I’m having a short visit to Manchester with the goal of scoring at least 3 trams (out of my last 6). But I shall raise my glass (of water) to those absence friends.

Kite, I think it was me who bailed sitting in the Pullman coach for the standard Mk1!! Had I known Trip Reports royalty was sitting at the table, I may have stuck around! Being a Quail basher, it was nice to have a bay of 4 to myself and see exactly what was going on; something a few people of the other forum had trouble with ;) Maybe another time.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was another couple people who changed to that additional standard class coach, I've certainly done it in the past on tours (especially since Pathfinder have a habit of allocating seats by boarding station so you end up with a case of one coach being busy with the other coaches being empty until further on, so I shift to an empty table not due to be used until the last pick-up before returning to my actual seat)

I was in E15 backwards

Hope you enjoyed the legroom then, as I had 15F :) I'm guessing the gent sitting in 16F moved over though!

Wow that’s a great trip on the South Central there, do 377/6s or other 377s often go to Tattenham or is it just 455s?
