I despise any kind of seat where I have to be opposite someone, as it is just no legroom - so airline seating for me.

Some bloke got very grumpy with me last week when I asked him to move his bag taking the seat next to him, asking why I couldn't sit on the empty opposing seats over the aisle. Whilst empty then, loads pile on in Woking so I have to sit hunched for the rest of the journey.

Missing options:
window
aisle
middle of three
transverse (like the Overground)
luggage rack (maybe not, been watching Portillo in India)

Luggage rack is definitely an option on some trains. The suitcase one, not the overhead one obviously. On some it's the perfect height to hop up onto, though it's better suited to children and lighter adults.

For me, I want a window seat with a charging point. In daylight hours I want to be forward facing with a proper window to look out of.

On my regular trains I have favourite seats to book but, unfortunately, there is no guarantee of which way the seat will face. Of course, if it was allowed :):):), someone could reserve two seats (one in each direction) and use the appropriate one ;).

Longitudinal is bad. Middle of three is very bad (unless you know the other people... then it's not so bad)

Is the question asking if I am travelling alone? If so, individual. I know DarloRich won't like me saying that ;) I get to meet hundreds of people most days, and when I am on a train alone I usually just want to relax, listen to music, browse the forum, read things, look out the window, and have a bit of space and legroom.

If I am travelling as a group then obviously table seat are better.

Perhaps a better option for the poll would be to separate each option and allow multiple choices?

Virgin Penalino - Seat A22
  • Quiet coach
  • Table seat - so extra legroom without the prospect of anyone in front of you
  • Aisle seat
  • Opposite luggage storage, if you want to keep an eye on things

Definitely prefer travelling backwards, and on a Pendolino I like the seats at the end of the carriage with no view as I'm often using a laptop for work - no problems with glare on the screen, no worries about security from people looking over my shoulder, and if it's raining or dark there's nothing to see anyway!

I'm probably one of the rare ones but I almost exclusively choose the backwards seats

Backwards or forwards. I don't care which way.
I hate table seats though and am annoyed when the booking system I'm using forces me to have one.

Coach A Seat 45. Extra legroom, unlikely to be needed as priority seat as far from the doors, airline seat, window view, space for luggage behind opposite seats, subdued lighting.

You mean longitudinal.
Yes I did. Thanks. I was holding my phone the other way and got confused!

Other missing options:
Pseudo-window (e.g. that seat on the East Mids Meridian that's beside the wall with acres of plastic and about a 2-inch sliver of glass)
Window with actual glass
Luggage rack with window (some of the mid-coach luggage racks seem to have more window than actual seats)

And no-one's mentioned "seat 61" yet?

I dislike all TGVs and derivatives so you can keep that one.

Edit: any passenger rail vehicle in which the seats mostly do not align to the windows in a premium class (let alone Standard) is by definition in my book one to avoid. I can understand the need to cram in passengers in Standard due to high volumes of passengers, but not designing the passenger cabin properly in a premium class where I am paying extra (often a lot extra) is completely unacceptable.

Forward, Aisle, Table for me. Still offers a very good view out the window but means I can get up and walk around the train without asking other people to get up. I do though move elsewhere if it gets me a plug.

What is your favourite seating position when travelling?

Forwards, right-hand side. Not entirely sure why right-hand side is a preference, however for some reason I feel slightly awkward on the left. I always wondered whether this is something as silly as being right-handed, or perhaps being used to sitting on the right when driving a car?

Right hand side on UK double track - unless the main railway interest or scenery is on the left (Dawlish to Penzance for example).

Forward is very important for me, other than that minimal preference for a window seat & minimal preference for airline style seat

My main priority is not one of the ones on the list. It is a window seat. And one with an actual window not a blank wall. I'm not too fussed about forwards or backwards, but I prefer a table (or facing) seat to a so-called 'airline' one. Longitudinal seats are OK on the tube but not on any longish journey in daylight or outside tunnels.

Forwards with a window, though not as bothered about being forwards

The best seats of all though are at the back or front of DLR trains! Such a great view

I always used to prefer forward facing, left hand side. for some reason I like to see the people on the platforms.
But these days, I just prefer any single seat. So glad that GWR have put more of these in 1st Class. so much nicer to have a little section all to yourself, and good legroom too

I like sitting on a 377 (only trains on my route) with a table, forward facing, left hand side. I usually go in either of the rear most two carriages. I like to see the signal aspects ahead & the front of the train.
