So many stations now have so many places to eat but I end up at least once a week Hungry at Bristol Temple Meads. There is no Leon, no Pret, well, hardly anything. A pasty stall, small sandwich stall and a Starbucks kiosk in the Subway and an Upper crust kiosk on platform three. There is Bonaparte`s bar on platform 3 which is ranked 229 out of 229 places to eat in Bristol on Trip advisor and thats it.
Only possible saving grace is a Weatherspoons beyond the station a few minutes walk away but that is usually too full to get a seat in.
Even when I was there as a trainspotter spending the day there 40 years ago there was more to eat. Surely things could be better.
So, what is the largest station with the worst food on the network ?

Nottingham could be better. There's a Costa, an Upper Crust and a Gourmet coffee bar in the station, and your basic Pumpkin on the platforms.

There's also a co-op in the station which is good for picking up dinner on your way home but not really for decent food on the go.

Nearby, Hopkinson does decent food and there's a greggs, a sandwich shop, a bar/grill place, a chippy and an independent coffee shop just down the road, so I guess if you count those, we're doing alright.

Most stations on the network don’t really do good food, and if they do it’s dear.

Bit like airport food really. Yes there’s Burger King/McDonalds ect like at London Victoria (if you can get a seat!) but not as best for quality/service as on the high street let alone price.

Best is usually someone where just off the premises like Wetherspoons that the OP mentioned, though I’ve never been to that branch.

Up here we’ve got a Wetherspoons on the concourse at Liverpool Lime Street.
Prices aren’t to bad but difficult to get a seat sometimes.

Saperstein.

There are also two Pumpkins. One on P10 and another small one on P7

Temple Meads has a greasy spoon out the front.

Brilliant! I'd much rather that than any of the soulless chains. Sadly it's getting very difficult to find anything but soulless chains in and around stations now

That Spoons opening has been a godsend. I've only not found a seat in it once and that was on the morning of a Cheltenham race day.

I've been disappointed at Crewe more than once. The Pumpkin and the Upper Crust are both dismal.

On the other end of the scale, we've been pleasantly surprised at Euston a few times.

+1 for Crewe. Even if I’ve only got 15 minutes there I’ll walk the Tesco’s about 5 minutes away.

Not much at Liverpool Lime Street. Certainly not if you want to sit down and eat. Although there are several reasonable chain restaurants just over the road and many more interesting places within 10 minutes walk.

At least Victoria has Victoria Place above the Southern platforms with plentiful food options.

Not much at Newcastle. Quite a few pubs around, and an excellent greasy spoon ('The Town House') just round the corner at the bottom (nearest) end of Grainger Street.

I like the pasties at Temple Meads, always pick one up if I'm passing through.

There's also a Tesco right next to the station and a Sainsbury's about 1 minute away, both have some nice sandwiches and snacks, so it's a pretty reasonable selection overall.

There is the Greggs/Subway/Starbucks complex now just by the new car park. Not much else, other than Tesco and McD. There are fast food joints towards Nantwich, though they are skewed to the late-night palate.

I second the options at Euston - all chains but a good choice.

For me Sheffield use to (pre-tap) suffer from the double negative of being poor provision at the station (Burger King, Pumpkin and some shops) but then also limited options within reasonable walking distance of the station. This is better now than it was at the station but still limited options around it due to it being a 10-15 minute walk into town.

Wagon 1871 opposite the station has a wide range of good food, from snacks to full meals.

They smell nice but they’re so overpriced!

Cardiff Central is a bit hit and miss for places to sit down and eat, though there are two Upper Crusts, a Pumpkin, a WHSmiths, a Spar, another coffee counter and an M&S. Also two Weatherspoons in close distance, one of which I tend to use if I’m spending any extended time in the area.

My ideal station has a small supermarket nearby for cold food and drinks (soft and alcoholic!) and a decent pub to wait in. Indeed the growth in convenience supermarkets has been a massive benefit for the traveller, and probably has contributed to the decline in one board food sales

Temple Meads is rather lacking on the supermarket front

Aren't there a row of shops near the new pedestrian entrance including a convenience store, sandwich shop and coffee shop?

The Cardiff Central on platform is outdoors and no seating area and the others are downstairs outside the Gateline and remote from the trains

With a Greggs, Boots & Tesco located just outside the station to avoid the station premium

Hart's bakery in one of the arches under the station approach ramp at temple meads is great...

The pub in the old First Class buffet (?) has a wonderful ambience and the food's not bad.

If i've got half an hour or more to kill I have a walk up to the Grainger Market for Dennis and June's. Cheap as chips and pretty decent.

I second this.

There is also a coffee shop (Costa I think) just on the corner outside the main entrance, and a McColls out by the back.
