Evening all. Long time lurker here. So today I found out I have an assessment day next Saturday in Southampton. Anyone else onboard? Should I be concerned by the 84 pages of material to try out before hand lol?

Hi Ross, congratulations, can I ask what depot you applied for? No don’t be put off by all the material, quite the opposite actually, it is really helpful.

I would use the group bourdon tool that is pinned at the top of this page rather than what the OPC send you, other than that it does help you for certain.

It's for Basingstoke mate. Really surprised as I only applied on Monday and wasn't expecting to hear anything for a while. I'll certainly have a look at the Group Bordon materials for sure too.

That’s a bit strange, might be worth ringing them. I have spoken to them a couple of time’s and they were very helpful.

I’ve been invited for the same day which is next Saturday, been going through practice material and it doesn’t seem too hard but obviously on the day it won’t be the same but definitely helps with practicing, would love to find any more practice materials available elsewhere

There is a lot of material out there but some of it I have to say I didn’t find all that accurate or useful. Definitely use the Group Bourdon tool that is pinned at the top of this forum.

As for the other tests. The material they provide is all very helpful so just really make sure you feel confident you understand it all. There is quite a good video on YouTube all about the Tea-Occ so check that out.

As others have said unfortunately these tests are designed to see if you have the aptitude to be able to do them or not.

Good luck

I did download the bourdon tool but prefer doing them on paper, also would I be penalised for missing some 4 dots or only be penalised for marking anything else other than 4 dots?the other tests ive started to understand well but 2 hand test is what I’m worried about as I never use my left hand to write etc

I printed some of the tests from the group bourdon tool from here which was really helpful.

The 2 handed co-ordination test I found the hardest of the computer tests but the trick is to get back on track as quickly as possible, not necessarily how many times you go off the track. I thought I had failed this part but thankfully I passed.

I’ve been doing well with printed dots, just tried the group bourbon tool on laptop and these are the stats I got:
Perception & attention: targets omitted- 15
Marked incorrect- 0

Speed:
Totals cells 962
Mean cell time 0.395
Median cell time 0.320
Completed rows 38
Mean row time 9.929
Median row time 9.370

Vigilance:
Row fluntuation 10.89

Are these any good enough?

Yeah I’d assume I’ll find that the hardest but I see so from what you’re saying it doesn’t matter how many times you go off the track as long as speed and accuracy is there to get it back on track and complete it?

Yes that is right, speed and accuracy is key throughout all of the tests and the 2 handed test is no different. My other piece of advice is that you get a couple of practices beforehand and if you don't take the dot right to the end the practice doesn't stop so you can properly practice going backwards and forwards around the shape before you start the actual test. Make the most of those practice turns.

Does anyone know about the telephone directory test, do you only get marks if you find ALL the matching symbols on the page? Or would you still get marks if you miss out some matching symbols?

This test is broken down into 3 stages. First listening to tones and identifying how many low tones you hear.

Then the directory part where you have to find the matching symbols and then part 3 is part 1 and 2 combined.

I don’t have a definitive answer to your question but I would imagine you get marked down for the ones you missed.

Anyone got any phone apps or something that is similar to the ATAVT perception test?

Not aware of any phone Apps but there is software available to buy that is similar to the test. Alternatively use the material the OPC send you but get the person showing you the picture to only hold it there for 1 second maximum.

on the software if you even miss one you don’t get any marks.. for example one page had 22 matching symbols, I selected 21 before time ran out and I didn’t get any marks for that page because I missed 1 matching symbol

A lot of sitting around and the tests were straight forward but i fell over the dials one unfortunately. Everything else okay. Six months wait before re-applying. I could kick myself as it was a case of not enough completed.

Ah no sorry to hear that, how many did you manage complete out of 43 in 7 min?
I’m guessing they didn’t let you sit any further assessments or did they actually let you sit all the assessments including computer based ones, despite failing on TRP 2? (dials test)

Sorry to hear that!

I managed 27 dials out of the 43 - was enough to pass luckily.

Hopefully the 6 months pass quickly for you!!

No myself and i think a couple of others were shown the door before the computer tests. Honestly I went to pieces on the dials test as i had been practicing on the version sent by email and yesterday we had the added numbers. Not sure why I went to pieces but hey ho. Think i got around 20 done but was spending to much time making sure they were correct. Even the assessor said "if you had squeezed in a few more it would have been a pass".

My question is I applied for a trainee position last weekend with a different company. Would I have to turn down an assessment day based on yesterday?

Sorry to hear that stick at it! I failed on the enhanced group bourdon for a previous TOC which wasn't required for SWR.
In my experience I would say it was a definite balance between accuracy and speed without allowing 1 to influence the other too much.
I only missed the enhanced group bourdon by a fraction, it was 100% accurate but didn't complete quite enough in the allotted time.
I was only in to do the computer tests yesterday morning first thing with 2 others. All 3 of us passed which was encouraging and we have been told to await interview dates.
Couldn't believe how many of you there were in the waiting room when we came back in, it was a busy morning there!

I’ve seen some examples with dials and indicator plus letters added such as A, B, C. You mentioned numbers added instead? did you get caught out on that?

Sorry to hear that. What made you trip up on the dials?

When I did them the addition of the numbers did make me worry a little as the practice material doesn’t even mention that, also the pages of instructions didn’t give me much confidence either. In comparison the practice material version was a lot easier!

I found that you just simply don’t have enough time to double check your answers. If you double check your answers chances are you are going to be too slow.

So try to go as quickly and accurately as possible. You don’t get penalised for wrong answers so don’t dwell on one question for too long.
