For anyone that needs any help or tips etc, I am at the medical stage having applied last year so it's all quite fresh in my memory.

Feel free to drop me a PM and I'll be happy to help.

Morning all!

I hope this hasn't been asked already and I've skimmed a few threads to find out - but is there an exact breakdown of chronology and tests that WMR require you to take in the recruitment process??? I've seen the breif outline of the processes in the Job description and I know testing varies from TOC to TOC but I am a little lost on what I should be preparing for (sounding optimistic!) Any help or links to other posts wld be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Someone else suggested:
- SJT
- Manager interview via Skype or similar
- Psychometrics

Thanks for this 4-SUB...

Is there a standard checklist of what they consist of or do WMR use their own? New to it all, the ones I've recently become familiar with are:

Group Bourdon (dots)
High/low tones
And ex. SjT

I'm trying to research as much as I can but feel I'm looking down the wrong avenues :(

The testing in respect of psychometrics is relatively standard, from memory.

I seem to recall previously dots, a white screen with a grey dot, some other related bits. It was mostly concentration and accuracy.

Most of the psychometric tests are conducted by The OPC although some TOCs do it themselves.

The first day was paper based tests that included.

Group Bourdon Test

Test of Everyday Attention (TEA-Occ)

This test is split into 3 parts listening to tones, symbols in a telephone directory and then combining the two parts.

Trainability for Rules and Procedures Test (TRP)
again this is split into 2 parts, 1 part listening/reading an extract about GLOP, you can make notes and you are then given roughly 20 questions to answer about what you heard without your notes.
The second part was the dials test.

Some TOCs/FOCs also ask for the DFFT which is the Driver Fault Finding Test.

If you pass stage 1 you will be invited to stage 2 which is the computerised tests and the MMI interview. Again this can vary by operator as some do the DMI before the MMI.

The computerised tests consist of.

ATAVT Perception Test. You will view a picture of a street scene for approximately 0.5-1 second. You will then have to choose from the list what was in the picture from: pedestrians; motor vehicles (excluding motorcycles); bikes, motorcycles or scooters; road signs; traffic lights.

WAFV (Vigilance) Test. You will see a grey square flashing on the screen. When it changes colour to a different shade of grey, you press the large green button as quickly as possible. This continues for 30 minutes, sometimes for long periods between changing.

2Hand Co-Ordination Test. You will have two joysticks, one will only go up and down, and the other will only go left and right. You have to control a ball around a track trying not to let it go off of the grey track, which includes curved sections.

Wondering how many people took the SJT
Same, apparently there were over 4000 applications, but I suppose it depends how many applications got to the next stage. Tbh from what I've heard, if you've been successful, you might not hear back for a while. So fingers crossed.

I heard back about 30mins ago! Unsuccessful I’m pretty sure I answered all the questions correctly, I have a cousin who is already a driver and he sat with me (not helping just to oversee it!) and was also 100% I had nailed it! But guess they must be looking for something else?‍♂️

Ahh bad luck. Yeah that does sound strange. Maybe just because of the amount of applications they had they are just having an aggressive filtering process. Better luck next time!

Yeh it's weird I had an unsuccessful email message. Bit weird how I passed it the last time I took the SJT with same answers I gave last time??

I've never failed an SJT before. I personally thought this one was very straight forward. Obviously not!

I am yet to know if I’m successful or not, but the important thing to remember is that it’s always about safety first, and rules, and honesty. So if the question about doing some checks but only the important ones to get away on time you answered as that and not as “do all the checks and be 2 minutes late” (or similar), then it’s probably a pit fall.

Safety was at the forefront of all my answers.

Yeah I got rejected too. Really not sure why to be honest. I currently work at Network Rail so all my answers in the application were safety and rules driven.

The SJT was simple and straightforward i.e you're taking over a train, previous driver is in a rush and just wants to hand over, answer is go through the paperwork properly, defects with the driver etc, rather than the "just check the important bits, or let the driver go answers.

ah well, good luck to the rest

I'm wondering if they have looked at the applications again to get the number down.

Is it a point based system? Have to hit a high threshold to pass maybe? Or who ever gets a certain pass mark then their application gets reviewed again?

It appeared to me as though everybody that applied got to complete the SJT. This may be completely false but I was under the impression that after completing the SJT some sort of computer algorithm would then go through the answers given in the SJT along with parts of the original application (check for use of key words, meeting of pre requirements etc). Those that didn’t meet those requirements were then sent rejection emails. Those that were successful would then have applications sifted and physically viewed for the first time. Either way, I’m not sure that it’s purely based on the answers given in the SJT but like I say, I may be wrong. Good luck to all.
