465913,247 & 466006 heading back to Slade Green now. Two of these will be going to Worksop for storage soon. Might be worth removing “Scrap” from this thread title seen as none of them are actually being scrapped anytime soon…

Taunton or Kent
Managed to spot 466043 passing through Strood this morning on its own en route to Gillingham depot, presumably ahead of a storage move.

But they can hardly return when the 707s have arrived - there's nowhere to put them?

Realistically at 30 years old and with no sidings for them presumably 30 at least will not be coming back.

Or if more depot space is built.
A good point.
Get the new stock in but you don’t want to build more depot space until you are sure that demand will return enough to demand it, so store the old trains.

The Chart Leacon work includes 2 phases (phase 1 just for TL service changes and stabling issues) and bidders for the last SE franchise ITT also had to propose plans for additional stabling (and maintenance), the 377 go back to GTR for maintenance for example.

Hence a time gap till new stabling capacity (in several locations) comes on line in the medium term but there is a capacity constraint in the short term

How much space will Chart Leacon bring to SE, roughly?
Given TL won’t be taking up any space at Ashford Down Sidings now, I believe it basically equates to 5 or so 12 car roads at Chart Leacon all in additional capacity.

I've not done a load of train travelling (something about a pandemic), but I've just passed Chart Leacon on way to Tonbridge and was shocked at how big the area is they've opened up if they are building just roads and very little other than the supporting driver extraction humps then I'm very surprised it's only 5 roads it looks like it could handle 8 or 9 but I'm sure someone will put me straight

5 is what I described as phase 1 above (originally for SE stock displaced by TL) for quick delivery, with the potential for more stabling and enhanced facilities with that later (if funded).

So Chart Leacon is looking very flattened pretty vast and excavators on site. We will see what SE/TL/NR come up with won't we.

Good to see some photos of it! As mentioned on another thread on here, Thameslink won’t be coming to Ashford or Maidstone anytime soon, so it’s entirely additional berthing for Southeastern as they won’t have to move anything from the Down Sidings now.

That could take years and decent funding for a sizeable amount of space.

Is Chart Leacon much good for Networkers as quite remote from metro land?

By then the 465s could be touching 35 years old and some been in store for years.

Are the 465s and 466s going to turn into another class that must be saved at all costs?

They've already lasted longer than a lot of SUBs and EPBs.

They already have poor reliability and storage for years isn't going to help that.

They also serve an area of the country with the highest housebuilding in the country.

Far better for a uniform new order to make use of 12-car infrastructure Network Rail spent million to install on Metro routes.

If it wasn't for continual short term extensions since 2014 they'd likely be gone years ago.

It's quite likely some will never return from storage IMO
