What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
No, it's D Stock from the District Line. No 73 Stock has been withdrawn from service yet.

No, they are ex District Line stock converted by Vivarail.

Former District Line D stock made surplus by the introduction of the S Stock. 73 Stock still awaits replacement in London

The 484 are former D78 stock, i.e. sub-surface size. Just about every type of London tube stock has probably been reported ‘on good authority’ to be heading for the island at some time or another.

Yup. There were even serious suggestions made for the Glasgow Subway stock!

Thanks all.

Also, has anybody posted here or in another thread the numbers of the D stock in LU days that will be coming to the island?

Surely no thread is complete without mentioning the possibility of using the third rail ready, very popular, versatile and modern class 442s ?. I will get my coat.

The Unimog seems to have the biggest Duracell batteries you'll ever see on the back

Pictures on a group on Facebook called Railways of the Isle of Wight which shows a lot of images of the 484 being dragged to and into the tunnel.

Up the creek
While waiting at Esplanade for the bus today I found myself staring at the conductor rail, as one does, and saw that there is a thin scrape along the top. So, presumably, they did not remove the shoes when towing the set through the tunnel. It also seems that, if they don’t clean the head of the juice rail before starting test runs under power, sparks will fly.

Have been renewing conrail for decades it never cleaned it soon conditions itself but as you say you will get a bit of extra arcing and dust for a few days.

Surprised the 83 stock never made it there... ;) Actually, given it's D stock brethren will be in service on the island for years to come, maybe not such a bad idea...

Any word on when these units will be in proper passenger service?

The 83 stock was proposed several times I believe. Made sense at the time as it was non-standard on LU but relatively modern, especially compared to the 1938 stock. The single leaf doors were never quite right for the Jubilee line but would have been fine on the quieter Island Line. Quite fitting that what ended up going over was the 83 stock's "big brother"!

RTT shows trains running from 1st August but I would not rely on that as they could be moving forward a month at a time. I would be on the lookout for a ghost timetable of ECS tests running ahead of any opening of the line.

Great video. I wonder what they would have looked and sounded like giving it some through Botley and Hedge end at line speed.

I can’t work out what bird they look most like, with the yellow bill, black head and two window eyes - Daffy Duck or something!

Does the running of these trains during normal traffic hours imply confidence in their performance / signal compatability, &c?
Pat
I think it's fair to assume they wouldn't be allowed out if there was much risk of them causing expensive delays.

Excellent to see that the test running has progressed so far. I do hope that they can do something in the software to take the edge off the extra loud high pitch screaming as they start to move. While I liked the 483s I am sure that these new trains will give a real boost to Island Line once they have settled in.
